The investigation was conducted using high-frequency ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electromagnetic methodologies. Of concern was the thickness of the concrete pad and foundation and the configuration of rebar reinforcing. The investigation was performed on August 8, 2016. The location of the survey area is shown on Figure 1. 2.0 Description of Geophysical Investigation Methods The GPR data was collected with a Mala GPR System with an 800 MIIz' antenna. The GPR data was collected using a time range setting of 10 to 20 nanoseconds (ns). The GPR survey was conducted along a series of parallel and perpendicular transects across the concrete slab. The EM portion of the investigation was conducted with a Profometer 5 Rebar Locator. A description of the GPR and EM techniques and the methods employed for rebar studies is provided in Appendix 2. A test pit was dug by the northeast corner of the slab. 3.0 Identification of Rebar Using GPR The features observed on GPR data that are most commonly associated with rebar are: The occurrence of high-amplitude parabolic-shaped GPR reflectors. • If the rebar is continuous, the associated GPR reflectors should match in both estimated depth below 4.0 Survey Results The concrete slab appeared to be a slab on grade. The thickness of the slab was calculated to be 7 to 8.5 inches thick. Based on both the test pit and the GPR data, there did not appear to be any thickened foundation around the edge of the slab. Rebar was identified around the perimeter of the slab. The rebar was located 3 to 5 inches from the exterior edge of the slab and at a depth of 2 to 3 inches from the top of the slab. The rebar appeared to be approximately '/Y inch in size. The locations of the rebar were marked on the ground surface with red lumber crayon A small amount of concrete over pour was visible around the perimeter of the slab. The results of the study are shown on Figure 1. Photographs of the study are provided in Appendix 1. Examples of the GPR data are presented in Appendix 1. A2.2 Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Method Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) consists of a set of integrated electronic components which transmits high frequency (800 and 2600 megahertz [MHz]) electromagnetic waves into the ground and records the energy reflected back to the ground surface. The GPR system consists of an antenna, which serves as both a transmitter and receiver, and a profiling recorder that both processes the incoming signal and provides a graphic display of the data. The GPR data can be reviewed as both printed hard copy output or recorded on the profiling recorder's hard drive for later review. GeoView uses both GSSI and MALA GPR systems. A GPR survey provides a graphic cross-sectional view of subsurface conditions. This cross-sectional view is created from the reflections of repetitive short-duration electromagnetic (EM) waves that are generated as the antenna is pulled across the ground surface. The reflections occur at the subsurface contacts between materials with differing electrical properties. The electrical property contrast that causes the reflections is the dielectric permittivity that is directly related to conductivity of a material. The GPR method is commonly used to identify such targets as underground utilities, underground storage tanks or drums, buried debris, voids, structural steel rebar or geological features. The greater the electrical contrast between the surrounding materials (earth or concrete) and target of interest, the greater the amplitude of the reflected return signal. Unless the buried object is metal, only part of the signal energy will be reflected back to the antenna with the remaining portion of the signal continuing to propagate downward to be reflected by deeper features. If there is little or no electrical contrast between the target interest and surrounding earth materials it will be very difficult if not impossible to identify the object using GPR. A GPR survey is conducted along survey lines (transects) which are measured paths along which the GPR antenna is moved. A calibrated survey wheel attached to the GPR unit records the linear distance travel of the GPR transect which allows for a correlation between the GPR data and the position of the GPR antenna conducted along the concrete surface. OFFICE COPY A2-2 Depth estimates to the top of a rebar steel piece are determined by dividing the time of travel of the GPR signal from the land surface to the top of the GPR signal reflection associated with the rebar by the velocity of the GPR signal. The velocity of the GPR signal is usually obtained from published tables of the GPR signal traveling through the surrounding concrete medium. The accuracy of GPR- derived depths typically ranges from 20 to 40 percent of the total depth. The ability of GPR to collect interpretable information at a project site is limited by the attenuation (absorption) of the GPR signal within the subsurface materials. Once the GPR signal has been attenuated at a particular depth, information regarding deeper features will not be obtained. A2.3 Interpretation and Limitations of Geophysical Methods The analysis and collection of EM and GPR data is both a technical and interpretative skill. The technical aspects of the work are learned from both training and experience. Having the opportunity to compare data collected in numerous settings to the results from concrete studies performed at the same locations develops interpretative skills for concrete characterization studies.
