The Commissioners and City Staff realized that the flow of information to our
citizens is vitally important. Look for some much needed improvements. We
are looking to provide you with the necessary tools to keep you informed and
improve your quality of life.
I hope we all might take the time to reflect on our many blessings, including
being spared from a major life altering storm. Let's give thanks to our amazing
city workers. They cleared streets and removed hazards before most of us
returned to the City. I hope everyone realizes that we have dedicated City
workers who work very hard to maintain this wonderful City we call home.
Try to stay warm and enjoy this special time of year when we have the City to
ourselves.
Thank you
Jimmy Hill – Seat 4
Don’t Forget to Adjust Timers for Daylight Savings
Sunday, November 6th
Twice each year, Atlantic Beach residents must reset the various clocks used
in our daily lives due to Daylight Savings Time. One timer that tends to be
forgotten is the timer on our irrigation systems. Please remember when making
adjustments to all the timers in the home and car to change the irrigation’s
timer as well.
During the fall and winter months, residents should irrigate one day per week,
before 10:00 a.m. and after 4:00 p.m. Know your days:
Address Irrigation Days
Homes with odd addresses: Saturday
Homes with even addresses: Sunday
Non-residential properties: Tuesday
For more information on water conservation, go to www.FloridasWater.com.
Atlantic Beach Turns 90!

events for residents to enjoy.

December 1st from 5 to 9 pm. Bigger than ever!
This holiday shopping event will include 23
artists of mixed media. Strolling violinist, Beverly
Chapman will perform at the Adele Grage Center.
Free food and beverages will be provided.
• Historical photos and original maps of the City of Atlantic Beach will be on
display beginning Friday, December 2nd at the Adele Grage Center. Hours of
viewing are 8 am to 4:30 pm. Monday through Friday.
• Continue the birthday celebration at the Annual Holiday Tree Lighting
that takes place in Town Center on Saturday, December 3rd. Bike parade and
entertainment begins at 3 pm and Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive at 6 pm. Events
include magic show, bands and choirs. Bring the kids out for some family fun.
• The celebration moves into Johansen Park on Sunday, December 4th
with Acoustic Night and food trucks from 3 to 5 pm. Local artists take the
microphone and display their talent under the beautiful tree canopy. Let’s fill
the park and celebrate our birthday!
CELEBRATE AMERICA RECYCLES
America Recycles Day is the only nationally-
recognized day dedicated to promoting and
celebrating recycling in the U.S. Each year on
November 15, millions of people across the
country take part in America Recycles Day to raise
awareness about recycling and the purchasing of
recycled products. The City would like to encourage
all residents and businesses to recycle 365 days a year.
Dear Neighbors,
With the Fall storm in our rear view mirror and Winter threatening
to sneak into our coastal community, now is a good time to think
about planning for Spring. I say this because I can't help but notice
the destruction of our sea oats and dune structure. The dune structure
and the sea oats played a vital role in keeping the sea water off our
streets and out of our homes when Hurricane Matthew paid us a visit.
It is very clear that other areas that were not blessed with a high and
healthy dune system were more heavily impacted than we were. As
the Army Corps of Engineers is pumping sand back onto our beach, I
hope the City of Atlantic Beach will aggressively work to restore these
critical plants and reinstall the barrier fencing.
Winter is also a good time to take a look at plants and trees in your
yard. Having a professional arborist come out to inspect your trees,
especially the larger ones, is a good idea. During this time of year
the trees are holding less mass for pruning and it is easier to see
any damage that may have been overlooked after the Fall wind
events. Trees can be a mixed blessing. They clearly provide a buffer
from storms and offer protection from wind events, but they can do
great damage if they are not cared for properly. They can drop heavy
limbs, fall on you home, or fall on a person causing great bodily harm.
Having your trees inspected by an arborist is an inexpensive way to
have a professional evaluation of your trees which in turn will give you
peace of mind and help to make your property safe. Educate yourself
on the differences between a tree service, a tree cutting business and
an arborist. It might be beneficial to hire an independent arborist, as
our trees and our canopy are a huge part of what defines our City.
You may have noticed that we have a lot of projects underway. It's
clear that the City is not sitting on its laurels. The police station is
moving along well, road projects are wrapping up, old neighborhoods
are getting new roads, and we are addressing the drainage issues.
Take a look at the City's website for the details on all of these projects.
The City's website should be looking better and better.

DID YOU KNOW?
Veterans Day was formerly known as Armistice Day? On November 11, 1918 at
11 a.m., World War I officially ended. On the one year anniversary, President
Woodrow Wilson declared November 11th "Armistice Day" in honor of the end
of the war and to honor World War I veterans. This day was marked with public
celebrations and a two minute halt to business at 11 a.m. In 1938, an act of
Congress made Armistice Day a national holiday. In 1954, the U.S. Congress and
President Dwight Eisenhower changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day
to Veterans Day to honor veterans who have protected our freedoms in all wars.
