Teenagers are getting away with it all over the state, and hundreds of people are becoming victims. The crime is 100 percent preventable, and it won’t cost you a penny. It’s called “car-hopping.” Criminals roam neighborhoods at night, pulling on car door handles, hoping to find an open vehicle. You’d think in this day and age no one would ever leave their cars unlocked, even in the nicest of neighborhoods. However, the false sense of security causes people to assume their cars are safe. Criminals will take whatever they can find from an unlocked car – whether it is loose change, gift cards, or something more substantial like a purse, gun, or spare key to the car! Atlantic Beach detectives have recently made an arrest of two juveniles that were charged with numerous vehicle burglaries in our City. We want to remind our citizens to lock their doors. We are working closely with residents to warn them because this is a crime that’s completely preventable. If you see any suspicious activity in your neighborhood, please call the police department immediately. Storage And Parking Of Recreational Vehicles Recreational vehicles stored or parked on any residential lot are subject to the following provisions: 1) No more than one (1) recreational vehicle, boat or boat trailer shall be stored or parked on any residential lot that is 5,000 square feet in lot area or less. Minimum lot area of 10,000 square feet is required for storage or parking of any second recreational vehicle, boat or boat trailer, or other type of trailer. 2) Recreational vehicles, boats or boat trailers, or other type of trailer shall not be parked or stored closer than fifteen (15) feet from the front lot line. 3) Recreational vehicles, travel trailers or motor homes shall not be inhabited or occupied, either temporarily or permanently, while parked or stored in any area except in a trailer park designated for such use. Sea & Sky Spectacular November 5-6, 2016 Jacksonville Beach Oceanfront 10 am To 4 pm each day Join the City of Jacksonville, Naval Station Mayport and Cities of Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach as the skies and waterways of the First Coast are transformed into the backdrop for the most exciting air acts and military demonstrations in the world! This action-packed event will feature a dynamic over-the-ocean sky show highlighted by the world-famous United States Blue Angels along with other military and civilian flight teams, live entertainment, a street festival featuring static displays of aircraft and military vehicles, simulators, recruitment booths, a kids’ area and more. For additional information on the airshow, visit www. jaxhappenings.com. Dear Neighbors, Cooler temperatures are just around the corner and that means all kinds of fun, fall activities are happening this month! Be sure to check out the City calendar, but to name just a few we have the Web.com Tour Kick Off (10/3), the October Festival held at Donner Park (10/8), Camping under the Stars at Russell Park (10/22), the Fall Festival at Beaches Town Center, (10/22) and the Sea and Sky Spectacular featuring the Blue Angels (11/5-6). If you are looking for something a little less crowded but still want to enjoy the nicer weather and Atlantic Beach’s many parks, why not get a permit to camp at Dutton Island? You can check out the new causeway and campsites. As many of you know, October 1st starts our new fiscal year and we have just completed the budget process for the coming year. While there are a number of projects that will be coming to completion in the next six months, this years budget also includes some new projects that I am excited to tell you about. In addition to the Safe Routes to School sidewalk work, the City has also set aside money to improve the sidewalks in the Sea Spray and Royal Palms neighborhoods, to make the paths that brings students from West of the school to Atlantic Beach Elementary safer as well. We will also be updating our Master Stormwater Drainage Plan. Additionally, we have allocated funds for a Comprehensive Code Review as it affects zoning and planning within the City. We will be soliciting citizen input as we start this process, so if you are interested, contact your City Commissioner to let them know you would like to be part of shaping the future of Atlantic Beach! Finally, I would like to offer a note of thanks to Chief of Police Michael Deal. In order to be closer to his family, he has accepted a position with the Winter Park Police Department. In the time he has been with us in Atlantic Beach, Chief Deal has exemplified the values of Integrity, Courage and Excellence that are emblazoned on our patrol cars. He has increased the outreach of the Department and improved the trust and involvement of our community with our officers. He has set a fine example for his officers and his predecessor to follow and I would like to simply say, “Thank You and good luck in your next endeavor!” Enjoy the fine Fall weather with your family and friends!
