Citizens will have an opportunity to meet with the City Commission and provide their input on City government and other issues. THE NATIONAL MARATHON TO FINISH BREAST CANCER 26.2 WITH DONNA This year’s annual marathon will take place on Sunday, February 14th. Runners love our community because of all of our spirited supporters and curb crews who come out and cheer them on as they complete their journey to the finish line. Each year the organizers of the marathon mark the route within our community with a special type of chalky paint that is designed to wash away after a hard rain. The City is requesting that citizens help keep our streets clean by not using any type of paint to mark the streets. If a more permanent type of paint is applied to rough asphalt streets, the markings can be difficult, if not impossible, to remove. The City looks forward to welcoming this year’s participants and encourages everyone to come out and support the fight to finish breast cancer. WINTER WATER CONSERVATION TIPS Our north Florida winter is finally here. Take action to protect your pipes and keep your water use down during the chilly season! • Insulate hot water pipes to reduce the time it takes to get hot water to the faucet. • Insulate pipes in unheated areas, as well as outdoor spigots and backflow preventers. • Locate and test your master water shut-off valve. If a pipe breaks in your house, you want to be able to shut the water off quickly. • Seal openings into the house where cold air could reach unprotected pipes. • If temperatures are predicted to reach near 20 degrees F, prevent pipes from freezing by leaving faucets open at the slowest drip possible. It’s not the flowing water, but the release of pressure, that protects pipes from bursting. • Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow heat to circulate around pipes. • Drain your pipes before going out of town for an extended period. Close the master shut-off valve, and run every fixture until no water comes out. During the fall and winter months, you are only allowed to irrigate your lawn one-day per week, before 10:00 a.m. and after 4:00 p.m. Know your day: Address Irrigation Days Homes with odd addresses Saturday Homes with even addresses Sunday Non-residential properties Tuesday Note that golf courses, cemeteries and recreational facilities such as ball fields are not restricted to the one-day per week schedule as long as they irrigate before 10:00 a.m. and after 4:00 p.m. For more information on irrigation restrictions and water conservation, go to www.FloridasWater.com. ATLANTIC BEACH CARES PROGRAM In October of 2014, Beaches Emergency Assistance Ministry (BEAM) became the administrator of the Atlantic Beach Cares Program, a program designed to help less fortunate citizens of our City. BEAM is a local nonprofit out of Jacksonville Beach with a satellite office at 1447 Mayport Road in Atlantic Beach. BEAM interviews each client to assess their needs. If they qualify for assistance from the Atlantic Beach Cares Fund, BEAM provides the customer a voucher to submit to the City of Atlantic Beach for assistance with all or part of their utility bill. Each family that is approved can receive assistance once every 18 months. The City of Atlantic Beach processes the voucher for payment and the credit is applied to the customer’s account. The Atlantic Beach Cares Program depends on donations from our utility customers. The program allows you to authorize the City to add $1, $5 or more to your monthly utility bill which would be used to help those in financial need. During the past year, contributors have helped 42 individuals and families with their utility bills in the amount of $3,149. In order for the Atlantic Beach Cares Fund to remain viable, we need your help and donations. If you wish to participate in this worthwhile program, stop by City Hall, 800 Seminole Road between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm to fill out an authorization form. If you have any questions about the program, please contact the Finance Department at (904) 247-5816. Thanks to everyone that has contributed during the past 12 months. HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE AND E-WASTE COLLECTION EVENT The City of Jacksonville will hold a household hazardous waste and E-waste collection on Saturday, January 23rd from 9 am to 3 pm at the Jacksonville Beach Public Works Facility parking lot (1460 Shetter Avenue). For more information call Jacksonville’s Solid Waste Division at (904) 387-8847. A complete list of items that will be accepted at this event is located on the City of Jacksonville’s website at www.coj.net. A BIG THANKS TO THE BEACHES COMMUNITY The City of Atlantic Beach wishes to thank the beaches community for making the Holiday Gift Tree and Toy Drive for local children a tremendous success. Due to the generosity and caring of our beaches community, 47 children were matched with “Angels”. Thanks to everyone for giving so many children a joyous holiday season. F ro m T he M ay o r Dear Citizens, On behalf of the City Commission and Staff, let me wish all of you a happy and prosperous New Year. It’s the time of the year when many people make resolutions to better themselves in some way. As you look forward to the coming year, you can make a resolution that will improve not only yourself, but your City. We are so blessed to live in a fabulous City which has outstanding citizen participation. Why not make a resolution to get more involved in 2016. Maybe your resolution would be to join a City Board, volunteer at an event, plant a tree, donate a park bench, adopt a park or a mile of one of our City streets for clean-up, become a mentor to an at-risk child at school, or yes, even run for office during the next election. One of the best ways to get involved is to start a new habit…a habit of attending commission meetings on a regular basis. There is no better way for your voice to be heard than to speak directly to your elected officials about your concerns. And, once you see how the City is run, you might be inspired to take a more active role in your community. Because after all, it is YOUR community. Those of us who sit on the dais are there to listen to you and to reflect your ideas and concerns in our actions. We can’t do that unless we hear from you. So this new year, why not make it your resolution to get involved in Atlantic Beach. All the elected officials and City staff value your input. And with your help, we can ensure that we continue to make positive changes to make a great City even better! Blessings to you and yours, Mitchell E. Reeves
