According to a University of Florida study, usually no irrigation is needed during the months of January/February, and less than half an inch per month during March. You can let your lawn tell you if it needs water; if grass blades begin to look wilted, water during the morning or evening hours. Use this season to inspect and maintain your irrigation system. Check for leaks. Inspect for broken or misdirected heads. Adjust sprinkler heads to cover only the target area. Clean micro-irrigation filters. Make sure the timers are working properly. And verify that the rain sensor shut-off switch is doing its job. During the fall and winter months, you are only allowed to irrigate your lawn one-day per week, before 10:00 a.m. and after 4:00 p.m. Know your day: Address Irrigation Days Homes with odd addresses SaturdayHomes with even addresses SundayNon-residential properties Tuesday Note that golf courses, cemeteries and recreational facilities such as ball fields are not restricted to the one-day per week schedule as long as they irrigate before 10:00 a.m. and after 4:00 p.m. For more information on irrigation restrictions and water conservation, go to www.FloridasWater.com. Atlantic Beach Floodplain Management Program The City of Atlantic Beach participates in the FEMA programs: the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and the Community Rating System (CRS), monitored by the Insurance Services Office (ISO). The City of Atlantic Beach Community Rating System (CRS) classification is based upon participation in the FEMA programs which allow discounts for flood insurance to residential and commercial property owners. Currently Atlantic Beach is rated as a Class 7 community which allows a 15 percent discount for flood insurance. The CRS participation includes such activities as outreach programs, maintaining floodplain management materials, preserving open space within the floodplain, providing floodplain map information to citizens, enforcing current building code and stormwater management regulations and maintaining City drainage systems. The Building and Zoning Department also provides copies of Elevation Certificates for structures that have been built in the floodplain. The City is pleased to participate in programs that offer such insurance discounts. For needed information contact us at (904) 247-5813 or stop by the Building and Zoning Department at City Hall. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity! The Atlantic Beach Police Department will be holding its 4th annual Citizen Police Academy beginning March 3rd. Step into the world of 21st century policing. We open the doors and shine a light on every aspect of the police department. If you want to be a part of this dynamic experience, come by the police station at 850 Seminole Road and pick up an application or contact Sgt. Ed Peck at epeck@coab.us or 247-5859 ex 5951. WILD WONDERSReturns to Dutton Island Preserve Do you enjoy the great outdoors and nature? A hands-on nature program for the entire family will be held at Dutton Island Preserve in Atlantic Beach beginning in March. Mike Rossi, an experienced local educator, will present his program “Warm Fuzzies & Prehistoric Pals”. Kids can experience one-on-one encounters with turtles, snakes, small mammals and reptiles. Dance, storytelling and humor are interwoven into this delightful presentation. The Wild Wonders Program will be held on the following dates: Saturdays at 1 pm – March 12th, 19th, April 9th, 23rd. Saturdays at 11 am – May 7th, 21st, June 4th and 18th. Flood Insurance Rate Map & Zone Information As a public service, the City of Atlantic Beach is able to provide, upon request, the following information free of charge. - Identification of properties that may be in or out of the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) as indicated on the City’s current Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM). - Additional flood insurance data for a site, such as the FIRM zone and the base flood elevation or depth, if shown on the FIRM. - A flood insurance purchase requirement handout that can help people who need to obtain a mortgage or loan for property within an SFHA area. If you would like additional information, please contact us at 247-5813 or stop by the Building and Zoning Department in City Hall. You will need to provide us the street address and, if available, the subdivision, lot and block number. City Hall is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. We look forward to serving you. DID YOU KNOW? City Ordinances and the Florida Building Code require all residents and business owners in Atlantic Beach to have address numbers displayed on the outside of all buildings in a conspicuous place and clearly visible from the street it faces. The numbers should be at least four inches high, with a ½-inch stroke width, the colors contrasting with the background, and easily seen and read from the street. The next time that you are in front of your home or business, take a moment to look and make sure that your address numbers can be clearly read from the street. In case of an emergency, having the address number clearly visible will assist the police, fire and rescue and JEA with locating your building quickly… and you may get hotter, fresher pizzas. Friends and neighbors I send you greetings from your City Staff and Commission. It is hard to grasp that the month of January is now just a memory. My how time passes. Perhaps some of you are looking forward to the coming Super Bowl or Valentine’s Day may be of special significance to you. Let’s not forget the birthdays of George Washington or Abraham Lincoln. And, even with the additional day of Leap Year, the month of February will soon be committed to memory too. I want to encourage all of you to stop for a moment every day this month and enjoy a moment of peace and calm. Don’t let the month go rushing by. Find something to appreciate that causes time to stand still for you, just for that moment. When I take my moment each day, I am going to reflect on my past year in Atlantic Beach and how fortunate I feel to live here, after all, we are the envy of most of the country. Some of the smallest things have had the greatest impact on me. For example, I watched the hatching of about 150 baby turtles and their subsequent dash for the water and life. Unbelievable. And appreciating my neighbors and the closeness I feel to them, and the richness that adds to my life. My wife. My children. Although not the smallest of things, they certainly are greatest of importance. Take back this extra day in February we have been given. And take back a day every month for the year. The time is yours, until it’s not. And so, as time marches on, celebrate children learning to win at the game of life through sports, or take extra effort to make someone important to you feel extra special. And be thankful for the sacrifices and contributions of those two great men, for without their efforts, surely our lives would be different. Because, all too soon, summer will have faded, holidays and winter will be bearing down on us again and we will wonder where did the time go. God Bless John M.
