Help Protect Our Sea Turtles
The City of Atlantic Beach would like to remind
everyone that turtle nesting season takes place from
May 1st through October 31st. Our beaches serve as critical nesting grounds for endangered sea turtles and your help is needed to protect their safety by
keeping our beaches as dark as possible during the
nesting season. The voluntary elimination of beachfront artificial lighting between
sunset and sunrise continues to produce excellent results. Results from 2015
included: Nests: 63, Total eggs: 6,826 (estimated) and total hatched: 5,441. For more information on sea turtle nests you can contact the Beaches Sea Turtle Patrol at (904) 613-6081 or visit their website at www.bstp.net.
The Atlantic Beach Cultural Arts & Recreation
Advisory Committee will sponsor the
13th Annual Arts in the Park
on Saturday, April 23rd from 10 am to 6 pm at Johansen Park.
Original art will be available for purchase by 80 accomplished artists
exhibiting their fine arts and crafts. Come out and enjoy the day amidst
elegant shade trees, listen to acoustic musicians and sample delicious
food…all at beautiful Johansen Park.
For more information contact the Recreation Office at (904) 247-5828 or

April Is Water Conservation Month
April has been formally recognized as Water Conservation Month in Florida
for the past 18 years, as April is typically a dry month when water demands
are higher due to springtime planting. Water is our most precious natural
resource – so let’s highlight the month of April by paying special attention
to how we use water. Make a special effort to use some simple solutions to
saving water:
This is the perfect time to check your irrigation system for leaks. Check
the timer settings as well, and make sure the moisture sensors are
working properly.
Plant some drought-tolerant plants.
Install a low flow shower head.
Wait for full loads before using the dishwasher or washing machine.
Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving.
Remember your days for irrigation – and only water when needed, before
10:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m.
Address Irrigation Days
Homes with odd addresses Wednesday and Saturday
Homes with even addresses Thursday and Sunday
Non-residential properties Tuesday and Friday
For more information on irrigation restrictions and water conservation, go to
www.FloridasWater.com.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection
Great News! The City of Jacksonville will hold another household hazardous
waste and E-waste collection at the beaches for 2016. The date of the event
is May 14th from 9am to 3pm at the Jacksonville Beach Public Works Facility
parking lot (1460 Shetter Avenue). For more information call Jacksonville’s
Solid Waste Division at (904) 387-8847. A complete list of items that will be
accepted at this event is located on the COJ website at www.coj.net.
Are You Interested In Serving The City?
The City of Atlantic Beach has several volunteer boards and committees
that provide a valuable service to the operations of the City. Citizens who
are interested in serving their community through volunteer service are
encouraged to complete a Board and Committee Member application which
can be obtained from the City Clerk’s Office or from the City’s website: www.
coab.us. Volunteers are needed to serve on the Code Enforcement Board,
Community Development Board, Cultural Arts and Recreation Advisory
Committee, two Pension Boards, and a Board Member Review Committee.
For more information about the responsibilities of these boards and
committees, please contact the City Clerk at 247-5809 or visit our website.
Dear Neighbors,
Spring is in the air and as I am enjoying watching the buds emerge
on my pear tree and the flowers bloom on my azaleas, the City is also
buzzing with activity. Spring is the best time to be outside in Florida;
so before our days get too warm, I encourage you all to get out and
enjoy all the beautiful amenities that our City has to offer. In addition
to our two and a half miles of beautiful beaches, we have a number of
family friendly parks to enjoy.
The Commission has recently embarked on some improvements to our
marsh front, Tideviews Park. With the addition of property that allows
for improved access to the park from the Marsh Oaks Neighborhood,
we are hoping to increase the number of our citizens who have
taken in the view from Sunset Pier. So if you haven’t relaxed in the
adirondack chairs at the end of the pier or under one of the gazebos,
check it out and let us know what improvements you would like to
see going forward. We are committed to making sure that each of our
parks best meets the needs of our community.
Baseball practice is underway and the courts are always open, so if
you are up at Russell Park, check out the new paths around the park!
We will also be planting some new trees around the Park to provide a
bit more shade and add to our future canopy.
Spring produce is arriving now, so don’t forget to check out the bounty
from our Midweek Market at Bull Memorial Park every Wednesday
from 3-6 pm. Arts in The Park is happening Saturday, April 23rd under
the shade of Johansen Park from 10 am to 6 pm. There’s also fishing
or launching a kayak at Dutton Island Preserve, soccer practice at
Rose Park, and plenty of shredding to take in at the Oceanside Rotary
Skateboard Park.
So many parks to visit and so little time… Don’t let Spring pass by
before you stop to smell the roses and check out an Atlantic Beach
Park you haven’t yet enjoyed!
Blessings to you and yours,
Blythe Waters
