Did you know that there is a program designed to help less fortunate citizens of our City? The program is called “Atlantic Beach Cares” and it is totally supported by contributions made by City of Atlantic Beach utility customers. The program allows you to authorize the City to add $1, $2, $5 or more to your monthly utility bill which would be used to help those who are having difficulty paying their utility bill because of their economic situation. The City of Atlantic Beach and Beaches Emergency Assistance Ministry, Inc. (BEAM) administer the program. In the first nine months of the current budget year, 34 of our neighbors have received assistance from the fund. If you wish to participate in this worthwhile program you can either stop by City Hall to complete the authorization from or you can download a form from the City’s website www.coab.us, complete and return to Atlantic Beach City Hall, 800 Seminole Road, Atlantic Beach, FL 32233. If you have any questions about the program, please contact Jim Perkins at 247-5816. Thanks to everyone that has contributed during the past year. Your support is greatly appreciated. City Budget Workshops Scheduled In preparation for the City’s upcoming fiscal year that begins October 1st, a series of City Commission budget workshops have been scheduled. Upcoming workshops will be held on Monday, August 15th and Wednesday, August 24th beginning at 5:30 pm in the Commission Chamber. Dear Neighbors, The good news about living in Atlantic Beach does not always make the newspaper, however, it’s an important factor we enjoy every day. The value of our homes continue to increase, the desirability of our City brings more positive attention to our area for residents, people are attracted by the general friendly ambiance of our City, and we can feel safe thanks to the civil character of our community as well as our police and fire services. When you consider the great services provided by our City, along with the many amenities residents and visitors enjoy daily, sometimes it can be overlooked how all of this happens and is maintained. The work of government must stretch across a continuum of options that requires dynamic input and participation in government processes by all citizens and City staff. How do we do this? Good governance is accountable. Accountability is a fundamental requirement of good governance. The City staff and Commission has an obligation to report, explain and be answerable for the consequences of decisions made on behalf of Atlantic Beach citizens. This is why our commission meetings are live-streamed and recorded. Good governance is transparent. Citizens should be able to follow and understand the decision-making process. This means that they will be able to clearly see how and why a decision was made – what information, advice and consultation the City staff and Commission considered, and which legal requirements (when relevant) were followed. The City Manager and City Clerk should respond quickly to any request for information. Good governance is responsive. Atlantic Beach government tries to serve the needs of the entire community while balancing competing interests in a timely, appropriate and responsive manner. Our City Manager watches over the day-to-day operation of the City. Good governance is equitable and inclusive. A community’s well-being results from all of its members feeling their interests have been considered by the City staff and Commission during the decision-making process. Good governance is participatory. Anyone affected by or interested in a decision should have an opportunity to participate in the process for making that decision. This can happen in several ways. Citizens may be provided with information, can state their opinion at City meetings or via email, be given the opportunity to make recommendations, and be part of the actual decision-making process. I urge all of you to participate in City processes and volunteer to serve. If you have any suggestions on how things can work better let your elected officials know. Located on the City’s homepage is a “Citizen Tracking Request” that can be used to communicate with City staff on any issue. Enjoy the rest of the summer and I send blessings to you and your family. Mitchell E. Reeves F ro m T he M ay o r Help Keep Atlantic Beach Litter Free Littering is a conscious decision people choose and individuals are much more likely to litter in “littered” environments. A clean community discourages littering and improves the overall quality of life. Litter hurts us all, individually and as a City. It decreases property values and increases crime and damage to our environment. One way to really make a difference is to get involved. Accept responsibility for your actions and influence the actions of others around you while at home, at work, at school, and in the community. Make a commitment to join with other citizens of Atlantic Beach to not be a litterbug and help keep our beautiful City litter free. Proper Garbage and Recycling Cart Placement for Service Just a reminder…the placement of your garbage and recycling carts should have a 3’ clearance from any object that would impede the automated truck from collecting your garbage and recycling (i.e. garbage toter, mailbox, fire hydrant or parked car). Carts should not be overfilled to the extent that the lid cannot close and all debris must be able to fall freely from the cart. Trash, recycling and yard debris should be placed curbside by 7 am on your regularly scheduled collection day. If you have any questions or concerns regarding garbage service, you can contact Advanced Disposal Supervisor Kenny Patterson through the City’s Public Works Department at (904) 247-5834. Twilight Movie in the Park returns on Saturday, August 26th at Jack Russell Park. To celebrate the Olympics, the featured movie will be “Rio”. Bring your chairs, blankets, and snacks and get comfortable for a great relaxing evening under the stars. The movie will begin at dusk and is free and open to the public.
