Showtimes: Thurs, Fri & Sat at 8:00pm | *Sundays at 2:00pm Hurricane Season Preparedness Elected officials and employees from the City of Atlantic Beach participated in the 2016 Peak Hurricane Season Tabletop Exercise in Jacksonville Beach on July 20th. The tabletop exercise put on by the City of Jacksonville Emergency Preparedness Division brought over 50 participants from all over Northeast Florida including Federal, State, and local organizations. The exercise focused on a strong category 2 hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean threatening Northeast Florida with a direct impact over the beaches. The exercise was well received by all participants and was an excellent opportunity for some of our staff and officials to get to know and interact with other key partners in our area. The objectives for this exercise included plans and decision points for evacuation and re-entry, providing timely and reliable information to the public, and identifying needed response and support from our Federal, State, and local partners in and around the beaches community. Mid-August to late October is considered Peak Hurricane Season. It is not too early or too late for all of us to prepare. A few key points to consider when putting your plan together: 1. Plan your evacuation route ahead of time and leave early. 2. If you are evacuating to avoid flood waters you may only need to travel as far as Hodges out of the stated evacuation zones to get to a safe place. Please monitor your local news stations and COJ Emergency Preparedness Division @ http://www.coj.net/departments/fire-and-rescue/emergency- preparedness.aspx for evacuation information. 3. The re-entry pass is no longer needed. 4. Make sure your address is up to date on your driver’s license. For more information on hurricane planning and preparedness please visit our webpage at www.coab.us and click the link under Emergency Preparedness. Water and Energy – Conserving One Helps the Other Water and energy may seem like two different issues, but they are strongly interconnected. It takes massive amounts of water to produce electricity. On the other hand, it takes a lot of electricity to treat water, distribute it to every household, and then treat the resulting wastewater. So, the next time you forget to turn off the garage light, you are also wasting water—and when you leave the faucet running while brushing your teeth, you are also wasting electricity. By conserving water, you are also helping the utility company to save energy and vice versa. In the meantime, you’ll be saving money by keeping both your water and electric bill low. Remember – Water only on your assigned days per week, before 10:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m. Homes with ODD addresses – Wednesday and Saturday Homes with EVEN addresses – Thursday and Sunday Non-Residential – Tuesday and Friday For more information, go to www.sjrwmd.com. Friends and neighbors, Summer is ending, schools are in session and most of our seasonal visitors have all returned home. I find this is one of the times I love most about living in Atlantic Beach. Quiet, peaceful and just a hint of change in the air. In my last letter to you all, I urged you to slow down and enjoy the gift we have all been given, the gift of calling Atlantic Beach home. Now, I have to remind myself to heed my own advice because I have allowed the season to pass so quickly. A walk along the beach is calling. Last year at the end of the summer, I was intently watching a turtle nest at the beach entrance near my home and was fortunate to witness the hatching of some 150 sea turtles and their race to the water. This season I was saddened when I didn’t see the familiar nest and its protective fence at our beach entrance. I wondered what had happened to the mother turtle that she had not returned as she had for the previous five years. Imagine in my elation when I learned that all the sea turtle nests south of 18th Street are being relocated due to the beach re-nourishment program. My most sincere thank you to the Turtle Patrol volunteers. I wonder if they can tell me where our adopted turtle nest has been relocated to, because it would be awesome to watch this turtle family grow and emerge again. These footnotes in life are blessings to be sure, and there are many more all around us. A lot of these happen because of volunteers and civil servants who choose to work on improving our quality of life. Please take a moment to thank them. And thank those in your Police Department for their selfless efforts to protect you. Although we have been fortunate not to have an attack on our Police Officers like other cities have suffered, I feel certain our officers are in a state of heightened awareness which weighs on them heavily. Speak kindly to them, smile at them, show them your appreciation and most importantly, do this by complying with their instructions when asked by an officer of the law. And, we have one other privilege that many in the world do not enjoy. That is the right to vote and to choose our elected officials. I urge everyone to make plans to voice your choice by voting in the coming election. I think Atlantic Beach should be the shining example to our sister cities to the south by leading the election in voter turnout. We have a City full of bright, talented people. For those voices not to be heard is a travesty. My most sincere gratitude for being allowed to work for you.
