A holiday show for people of all ages and all faiths, CONEY ISLAND CHRISTMAS introduces us to Shirley Abramowitz, a young Jewish girl who (much to her immigrant parents’ exasperation) is cast as Jesus in the school’s Christmas pageant. As Shirley, now much older, recounts the memorable story to her great-granddaughter, the play captures a timeless and universal tale of what it means to be an American during the holidays. Have You Visited Dutton Island Preserve Lately? The City’s Marsh Master Plan continues to move forward to improve public access to our beautiful marsh preserves. In September of 2015, the City of Atlantic Beach placed into service a new handicapped accessible, floating kayak launch on the north end of Dutton Island. This launch is a great addition to Dutton Island and will provide all tide kayak access for all of our citizens. Holiday Celebration & Tree Lighting Charge those camera batteries! The Beaches Town Center along with the Cities of Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach are sponsoring a holiday kick-off celebration on Saturday, December 5th. The festivities will begin at 3:00 pm with a bike parade through Town Center and everyone is invited to decorate their bikes and join in the fun. There will be many activities to keep the little ones busy including music, dance performances, face painting, arts and crafts for all ages and carriage rides. The Mayors of both cities will light the community tree and Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive by sleigh at 6 pm for the tree lighting and visit with the kids. For more information, go to www.beachestowncenter.com. Crime Prevention During the Holiday Season The Atlantic Beach Police Department wishes everyone a safe and happy holiday season. As the holidays approach, often times the number of thefts from unlocked vehicles increases. Please remember to lock your car doors and remove all valuables. When leaving your vehicle parked, at or away from your residence, remember to park in an area that is visible to the public and well-lit. For additional crime prevention tips, or to schedule a neighborhood watch meeting for your community, contact Atlantic Beach Police Sergeant Jon Tusing at jtusing@coab.us or (904) 247-5859. Don’t become a victim of a preventable crime! “Be an Angel” Gift Tree The City of Atlantic Beach “Be an Angel” gift tree is ready for “Angels” with a selection of holiday gift ideas for children in need of a gift this holiday season. Stop by the Adele Grage Cultural Center on weekdays from 8 am to 5 pm to select a child from our gift tree and make this holiday “something special” for a child in our local community. Please return wrapped gifts to the Adele Grage Cultural Center at 716 Ocean Blvd., no later than 4 pm on Wednesday, December 16th. For more information contact the Recreation and Special Events Office at 247-5828. Another completed project is the new marsh overlook at the end of 6th Street West. The total cost for the construction of these two projects was $280,000 with the City of Atlantic Beach funding 50% and The Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND) funding the other 50%. The City has received a tremendous amount of positive feedback from citizens on the Marsh Master Plan improvements. Come and check it out! Toy Drive The City of Atlantic Beach is holding a toy drive for children in our north beaches area. Anyone wishing to participate can drop off new unwrapped toys at the Atlantic Beach Fire Station, 850 Seminole Road by Wednesday, December 16th. Contact the Recreation and Special Events Office at 247-5828 for more information. Visit our website www.coab. us/events for more holiday events. Thanks for helping us make a child’s holiday season brighter. F ro m T he M ay o r Dear Neighbors Let me say at the outset how humbled I am to be your Mayor. I will do my best to be the kind of leader you expect and deserve. During the campaign, several promises were made that I want to reaffirm as I take office. First, our open door policy; We want to assure that all discussions, recommendations and decisions by City personnel and our City commission are open and transparent, allowing for input and comments from all sides in a respectful and civil environment and that differing opinions are heard. We want your input. Our “open-door” policy begins immediately. If you have issues you want to discuss as a citizen of Atlantic Beach, please feel free to call me directly. My cell phone number is (904) 955-0101 or email mreeves@coab.us. You can always reach all members of the Commission by email address electedofficials@coab.us. Moving forward, we hope to renew and strengthen working relationships with our neighboring beach cities, and the City of Jacksonville. We are stronger as a team. Let's take advantage of the strength it brings. We also want to build a unified City through an improved sense of neighborhood and to increase community safety. Citizen input is, of course, vital to that process. Your City Commission and staff care about our City. We care about the voice of our citizens and want to hear from you. Let’s get it done together. In our small community, every voice counts. We want to hear yours. The holiday season has different meanings for different people, but there is one thing we all share during this special time of the year. We like to think of this sharing experience as a warm glow, a truly spiritual thing, coming from the heart and directed toward our fellow man. With this uppermost in my mind, during this special season, we are thinking of you and your families, whose efforts and friendships have helped us along the way. We hope you will have a truly fulfilling and joyous holiday season, and that the coming New Year will bless your business, and your home with all the good things life has to offer. Blessings to you and yours, Mitchell E. Reeves
