Learn More about Florida’s Water Quality
If you’re interested in water issues, take a look at the University of Florida’s fascinating
website—Florida Water Quality Information System.
The site contains links to water related publications, interactive maps, frequently asked
questions and contacts. Some of the topics include aquatic life, groundwater, water quality
testing, wildlife and water, irrigation practices, forests, and hydrology.
To visit the site, go to http://waterquality.ifas.ufl.edu/.
Remember Your Day:
Only irrigate on your day, before 10:00 a.m. and after 4:00 p.m.
Odd numbered addresses – Saturday
even numbered addresses - Sunday
Nonresidential properties – Tuesday
For more information on water conservation go to www.FloridasWater.com.
Residential Recycling
Atlantic Beach is now using an automated truck to empty residential recycling carts.
The placement of your recycling cart should be placed about 1’ from the street with a
3’ clearance from any object that would impede the automated truck from collecting
your recycling (i.e. garbage toter, mailbox, fire hydrant or parked car). Carts should not
be overfilled to the extent that the lid cannot close and all debris must be able to fall
freely from the cart.
Trash, recycling and yard debris should be placed curb side by 7:00 a.m. on your regularly
scheduled collection day.
WILD WONDERS
Returns to Dutton Island Preserve
Do you enjoy the great outdoors and nature? a hands-on nature program for the entire
family will be held at Dutton Island Preserve in Atlantic Beach beginning in March.
Mike Rossi, an experienced local educator, will present his program “Warm Fuzzies &
Prehistoric Pals”. Kids can experience one-on-one encounters with turtles, snakes, small
mammals and reptiles. Dance, storytelling and humor are interwoven into this delightful
presentation. The Wild Wonders Program will be held on the following dates: Saturdays
at 1 pm – March 14th, 28th and april 11th and 25th
Flood Insurance Rate Map & Zone Information
As a public service the City of Atlantic Beach is able to provide, upon request, the following
information free of charge.
- Identification of properties that may be in or out of the Special Flood Hazard area
(SFHA) as indicated on the City’s current Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM).
- additional flood insurance data for a site, such as the FIrM zone and the base flood
elevation or depth, if shown on the FIRM.
- a flood insurance purchase requirement handout that can help people who need to
obtain a mortgage or loan for property within an SFHA area.
If you would like additional information, please contact us at 247-5826 or stop by the
Building and Zoning Department in City Hall. You will need to provide us the street address
and, if available, the subdivision, lot and block number. City Hall is open Monday through
Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. We look forward to serving you.F ro

Dear Neighbors
As discussed in last month’s newsletter, we have begun our zoning code
review process with a workshop to look at our industrial and commercial
areas. There has also been a very hearty debate about the proposal to
have a pedestrian and bicycle gate into Hanna Park at the north end
of Seminole Road. At the moment, public sentiment seems against this
but discussion will be ongoing. The biggest concerns seem to be conflicts
between vehicular traffic and the already heavy bicycle and pedestrian
traffic, which is expected to increase.
Jacksonville is contemplating expanding the area for the Mayport Village
Community redevelopment area (Cra), to include the a-1-a and Mayport
Road corridors to our Atlantic Beach borders. This suggests that our
CRA plans will meet with not only approval from Jacksonville, but also
cooperation in a joint endeavor. Generally, the CRA has a fairly long time
frame and guarantees the City’s commitment to the area to encourage the
private sector to also invest in and commit to this area.
Tipping Fees are the fees Duval County charges Atlantic Beach and others
for the ability to dump our waste at their facilities. There has been a
multi-year dispute about if and how much atlantic Beach should be
paying. This is nearing finalization with a proposal worked out by Mayor
Brown’s office and Atlantic Beach staff and commission. The next step will
be approval by the Jacksonville City Council. This will not result in any
increase in your bills as a new 7-year contract was initiated that included
our hauler absorbing these fees with no increase in charges to the citizens.
On a final note, the much anticipated grand opening of the redeveloped
Atlantic Beach Country Club took place on January 10th. All involved
did a wonderful job to ensure this will be a wonderful addition to our
community. Welcome to Atlantic Beach Country Club and the new
homeowners. We continue to hope their wish to become annexed into
Atlantic Beach will be the next joint agreement worked out between
Jacksonville and Atlantic Beach.
Blessings to you and yours,
Carolyn Woods
Daylight Savings Time - Check Your Smoke Detectors
As a reminder, Daylight Savings Time begins at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 8th. Set your
clocks one hour ahead. Remembering to change your clock for Daylight Savings Time is also
a great opportunity to give some attention to the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in
your home. Replace batteries in your battery powered detectors once a year, and test them
at least monthly throughout the year. Detectors that are part of a built-in fire alarm system
should be tested as part of the fire alarm test and maintenance schedule prescribed by the
manufacturer. It is also recommended that all detectors be given a good dusting and vacuum
cleaning every six months.
City offices will be closed on Monday,
February 16th to observe the
Presidents’ Day holiday
