A total of 17 citizens participated in the 12 week class along with members of the Atlantic Beach Police Explorers. Classes included topics on Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Animal Control, Traffic Enforcement, Emergency Communications, the COPS program and our Crime Suppression unit. Participants also received instruction and demonstrations on SWAT, Tasers, Firearms, and other use of Force applications. They experienced a day at the Firearms Range where they had an opportunity to fire some of the same firearms our officers carry. They also had an opportunity to ride during a shift with one of our police officers. It was a great opportunity to get to know our police officers and see what they do. Participants from the first two classes have already started an Alumni group that meets on a regular basis and continues to be a tremendous asset to our Police Department and our community. We will be scheduling our 4th class sometime next year. If you are interested in attending, please contact Sgt. Ed Peck at (904) 247-5859 or email epeck@coab.us for more information. It’s Hurricane Season—Turn Off the Water before You Evacuate When strong hurricanes hit, water lines can break if your house is damaged by the storm, leading to even more damage to your home. That’s why it’s important to turn your water off before you evacuate. At the start of hurricane season, make sure you know where your main house water valve is located and test it to make sure it works. Make sure all family members know how to turn the water off as well. When an evacuation order is issued, close the valve before you leave. Remember your days!
