How do you know if your pool is leaking? • losing more than 1-inch of water from your pool weekly • Having trouble balancing your chemicals because you have to keep adding water • Constantly damp soil around the pool • loose or falling tiles • obvious cracks, gaps or settling  Use a pool or spa cover to reduce evaporation, and save up to 7,000 gallons of water per year  Consider cartridge filters over sand and De filters. Backwashing sand and diatomaceous filters uses about 500 gallons for each cycle. Reuse backwash water for nearby plantings.  Keep the pool level lower to minimize loss from splashing.  Surround your pool with shrubs or fences and turn off waterfalls or fountains to cut water loss from wind evaporation.  Avoid draining the pool unless absolutely necessary. If you must drain the pool, route as much water as possible to landscaping. For more information on how to conserve water, check out the St. Johns River Water Management’s website at www.floridaswater.com. Remember your days! Only irrigate on your days, before 10:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m. Address Irrigation Days Homes with odd-numbered addresses Wednesday and Saturday Homes with even-numbered addresses Thursday and Sunday Non-residential properties Tuesday and Friday Completion of Roberts Street Project The Florida Department of Transportation recently completed a project that addressed a long standing goal of the City of improving the drainage, safety and appearance of the ditch between Roberts Street and Dudley Street. The project included the piping and enclosure of a large portion of the Roberts ditch at a cost of approximately $400,000. Have You Registered Your Number? In the event of a hurricane emergency the City of Atlantic Beach will notify our citizens of emergency evacuation plans through the First Call emergency Notification System. You can register a land-line phone number and/or cell phone number by calling 1-866-484-3264 or register online at www.alertregistration.com. These phone numbers are not subject to public disclosure. Placement of Waste/Recycling Carts In order for the automated collection trucks to safely empty residential waste/recycling carts it is critical that the carts be properly positioned. Carts should be placed about 1’ from the street and must have at least a 3’ clearance from any object that would impede the automated truck from collecting your recycling (i.e. garbage toter, mailbox, fire hydrant or parked car). Carts should not be overfilled to the extent that the lid cannot close and all debris must be able to fall freely from the cart. Just a reminder…Trash, recycling and yard debris should be placed curbside by 7:00 am on your regularly scheduled collection day. F ro m T he M ay o r Dear Neighbors The Commission's strategic planning workshops were held in early May with Marilyn Crotty, of the Florida Institute of Government, facilitating. What came out of these workshops was a planning framework. Nothing was set in stone, but rather when economic decisions and budgeting priorities are set in the future this framework will offer a means to qualify the desires and needs as to how well they match the long term vision for our City. As soon as the strategic planning report is completed, it will be posted on the City’s website at www.coab.us. One long term strategic objective was met this month when the Atlantic Beach Country Club development won annexation approval from the Cities of Jacksonville and Atlantic Beach. A ceremonial signing was held on May 11th at the Club. One more step remains to finalize the annexation which is expected to be completed by the end of the summer. This is a positive for Atlantic Beach and kudos to everyone who worked diligently for many years to make this happen. Campaign season will begin in June. The City will hold its local election on Tuesday, August 25th. In the past, some citizens may have found it somewhat difficult to stay updated on campaign issues during the summer months due to traveling and vacationing with their families. Now, you can get updates by logging onto the City’s website or contacting the City Clerk’s office at (904) 247-5809. In closing, it is hard to believe another school year is coming to a close. Congratulations to all the graduates in your life. Summer brings travel and adventures, may all of yours be rewarding and safe. Blessings to you and yours, Carolyn Woods
