For example, if Christmas day is Thursday and your normal service day is Thursday, you will be serviced on Friday. Customers who are normally serviced on Friday of that week will be serviced on Saturday. Be Notified in an Emergency The City of Atlantic Beach works with a service called CodeRED to notify citizens about emergency events occurring in the City. Examples could be road closures, water emergencies, and storm information. Citizens are encouraged to sign up with the CodeRED Community Notification Enrollment website to ensure they are receiving these notifications in a timely manner. The CodeRED system has the capability to place calls to cell phones, land line phones, Telecommunications Devices for the Deaf and send text and email messages. The enrollment page can be reached at www.coab. us/codered. Citizens without Internet access can sign up by calling 904-247-5816. 4th of July Drunk Driving Prevention Campaign Americans love to celebrate the Fourth of July with family, friends, food and fireworks, but all too often the festivities turn tragic on the nation's roads. The fact is, this iconic American holiday is also one of the deadliest holidays of the year due to drunk-driving crashes. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, during the July 4th holiday period over the last five years, 765 people lost their lives in crashes involving drivers with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or more. These fatalities account for 40% percent of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities over this same five-year period. The Atlantic Beach Police Department recommends these simple tips to prevent drunk driving. • Plan a safe way home before the fun begins. • Before drinking, designate a sober driver. • If you’re impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation. • If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, don’t hesitate to report them by dialing 911. • If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take your friend’s keys and help your friend make other arrangements to get to where he or she is going safely. How Much Water Do You Use? During our everyday activities, it might not seem like we use a lot of water – but the gallons can really add up. The St. Johns River Water Management District’s website has a handy online survey that helps you figure out how much water you use in your house every day. Go to www.FloridasWater. com and click on “Water Conservation” and then on “Interactive Home Water Use Survey.” A 3-D house diagram pops up. When you click on a room or fixture, a window appears where you enter your information (how many showers a day, etc.) The site also has tips on how to lower your water use – which protects our valuable resource while saving you money! Remember your days! Only irrigate on your days, before 10:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m. Address Irrigation Days Homes with odd-numbered addresses Wednesday and Saturday Homes with even-numbered addresses Thursday and Sunday Non-residential properties Tuesday and Friday Campaign Signs Check the Regulations before Posting Now that the campaign season is in full swing, questions often come up about the placement of campaign signs. Whether you’re a homeowner, a business, or just endorsing a candidate for election, regulations for the type, size and location of all signs can be found in Chapter 17 of the City Code. Some things to consider when putting up a campaign sign are:  Election signs must be placed wholly within the boundaries of your property. Signs are not to be placed on city right-of-ways, medians, trees and utility poles.  Campaigns signs can be no larger than four (4) square feet in size.  There is no limit on the number of campaign signs placed on private property to announce or advertise a candidate.  Campaign signs shall not be placed on property prior to qualification of the candidate to run for office, and all such signs must be removed within 72 hours after the last election.  No signs are permitted within 100 feet of the entrance to a polling place on the day of election.  Campaign signs displayed within motor vehicles conducting routine business activities on city or other public property shall not be prohibited, provided that the vehicle is not parked on city property, other public property or right-of-ways for the sole purpose of displaying political campaign signs.  Illegally placed campaign signs shall be removed by City Staff without notice to the candidate or abutting property owner or occupant. If you have any questions regarding campaign sign or the City Codes, contact the City’s Code Enforcement Officer, John Markee, at (904) 247-5855. F ro m T he M ay o r Dear Neighbors July is here, summer is in full swing, and life is good in Atlantic Beach. We have four major drainage improvement projects going on that will improve our roadways and sidewalk/pedpath system. The first is the Robert’s Road drainage ditch. Pipes have been installed and buried creating a much improved, greener and safer drainage system and walkway for citizens to use. Second, in the Saltair subdivision, the City is unclogging the drainage swales, replacing decayed pipes, and installing a sidewalk along Sturdevant Drive to provide a safer path to the beach. Third, is the improvement of Francis Street. Work is nearing completion of Phase One which includes new pipes, sidewalk, driveway aprons and grassing from Donner Road to Jordan Park. Phase Two will begin next year and continue the improvements north to Dutton Island Road. Fourth, is Seminole Road, which thanks to much public input and insight, is entering the end of the design phase with bids to go out early in the fall and construction slated to begin this winter. We also have two Marsh Master Plan projects in the works. The 6th Street Marsh Overlook is currently in the permitting phase with construction slated to begin in August. The Dutton Island access road improvements and pedpath is nearing the 60% design stage and the City is working with the Florida Inland Navigation District to apply for grants to help fund this project. Finally, the City continues to move towards the creation of a Community Redevelopment Area (CRA), along the Mayport Corridor and is inching closer to a partnership with Jacksonville and their CRA for the Mayport Village and Corridor. In closing, I invite everyone to come out and enjoy the 4th of July fireworks celebration at the Jacksonville Beach Pier beginning at 9 pm. Hope to see you on the beach. Blessings to you and yours, Carolyn Woods
