F ro m T he M ay o r Dear Neighbors Welcome to spring! As we all shake off our cabin fever and head to the streets on our bikes, on foot, or by car to our many parks and great beach, please be mindful that we all share responsibility for safe travels. Here are a few helpful websites you may wish to visit: www.walkbiketoschool.org, www.sharetheroadsafely.gov, and www.bicyclesafe.com. our Charter Review Committee has been very diligent and spent quite a bit of time completing a thorough review of our charter. A hearty thank you to each of the committee members. The committee’s recommendations are being discussed at a series of workshops and commission meetings. Please check the City calendar and feel free to join in the conversation. The final proposed revisions will appear on our August 2015 ballot for your approval. Discussions and research continue into whether creating a Community Redevelopment Area (CRA), is the right choice for our long term Mayport Corridor improvement plan. Generally, the CRA has a fairly long time frame and guarantees the City’s commitment to the area to encourage the private sector to also invest in and commit to this area. Part of this process will include long term visioning that will also address how we will design for bike and pedestrian safety. Finally, as a part of Atlantic Beach’s focus on bike and pedestrian safety, City staff will begin to discuss ways on how to make our streets safer for both bicyclists and pedestrians. As a reminder, it is state law that all vehicles must yield to pedestrians in the crosswalks. State law also classifies bicycles as vehicles and requires they ride with traffic and obey all vehicle laws and rules. Let’s all do our part to have safe streets.
