Safe, dependable drinking water delivered right to your tap for less than a penny per gallon; without it, we wouldn’t have the wonderful quality of life we all enjoy. Only tap water provides the critical combination to protect the public health, douse fires, and support the economy, but we sometimes take our drinking water for granted. Celebrate Drinking Water Week from May 3 through 9 this year by learning more about this precious resource and ways to conserve it. Check out water saving fixtures at the U.S. ePA’s WaterSense website. Go to www.epa.gov/watersense to find products that save water and money while maintaining performance. Remember your days! Only irrigate on your days, before 10:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m. Address Irrigation Days Homes with odd-numbered addresses Wednesday and Saturday Homes with even-numbered addresses Thursday and Sunday Non-residential properties Tuesday and Friday HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS – ARE YOU READY? Hurricane Season Begins June 1st The Atlantic Hurricane Season is from June 1 through November 30. As we all know, storms can and do threaten our City, and that threat must be taken seriously. Federal, state and local agencies have their roles in providing assistance in the event our area is impacted by a hurricane or tropical storm. However, this assistance should not be perceived as a substitute for individual planning and preparedness. everyone must take personal responsibility for ourselves and our families by being prepared to deal with the aftermath of a storm. Advanced planning, staying calm, and being patient are the most important things to do. This will make it easier for everyone should a storm threaten the City of Atlantic Beach. NATIONAL HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS WEEK May 24 – May 30 Be Prepared – Get a PLAN! Know Your evacuation Zone History teaches that a lack of hurricane awareness and preparation are common threads among all major hurricane disasters. By knowing your vulnerability and what actions you should take, you can reduce the effects of a hurricane disaster. MAKE A PLAN Think ahead and create a family emergency plan. Plan how you will get together in different situations. Discuss what to do if you must evacuate. Practice your plans with your family. Have a contact list. If phones are down, pick two meeting places: 1) near your home and 2) somewhere outside the neighborhood. Test smoke/carbon monoxide detectors monthly. Learn how to turn off gas, electric, water and heater systems at main breaker switches. learn first-aid and CPR and discuss basic safety rules. Make sure children know what to do if they are home alone. Your plan should include elders, disabled family members and pets. SPECIAL NEEDS SHELTERS The Duval County emergency Preparedness Division maintains a registry of clients who have been identified as persons with either special medical needs or special transportation needs during an emergency. These individuals require assistance during evacuations and sheltering or need special transportation to a shelter. Individuals with special medical needs who plan on using a public shelter during an evacuation should register well in advance by contacting the Emergency Preparedness office by phone at (904) 630-2472 or visiting www.coj.net to complete a registration form. A new registry is created each year in January, so individuals must re-register every year to remain in the system. once the registration form is completed it is reviewed by a health care professional and categorized by the assistance required. Individuals are then assigned to a shelter or hospital and to the appropriate transportation agency, if applicable. HOUSEHOLD HAZADOUS WASTE EVENT Mark your calendars! A complete list of items that will be accepted at this event is located on the City of Jacksonville’s website at www.coj.net/HHW. F ro m T he M ay o r Dear Neighbors You may have noticed there has been much discussion about our trees in the last few months. Of main concern has been how to protect our very special, and unique for the beach area, tree canopy without creating an undue burden on homeowners. Many options have been discussed during recent commission meetings and the hope is to have a final rewrite of our tree ordinance by the end of the month. We have a draft version of an updated tree ordinance available on our website www.coab.us. Please share your thoughts, concerns and solutions with all of the commission by calling or email us all at electedOfficials@coab.us. It is important we have your input to create a good balance that will work for our community, homeowners and the tree canopy. There has also been much discussion about the plans for the Seminole Road drainage improvements and beautification. All efforts have been made to listen to the community. To this end, on-street parking has been eliminated, the number of light poles reduced, ADA compliant street crossings, sidewalks, and ped-paths have been designed and "Miami curbs" are being used to reduce costs and provide protection for the drainage swales. Thank you to everyone who participated in this process. We will soon be turning our attention to long term strategic planning. This will involve a lot of community involvement as we strive to create safe city wide bike and pedestrian paths, continue work on improvement along the Mayport Road Corridor, and plan for future recreation and cultural arts opportunities. I hope you will join in the process, be constructive and be heard. We have a great little City, just the right size for all of us to be able to participate. More information and dates will be available on our City website as the process progresses. Of course all these plans and dreams are budget driven and constrained and the budgeting process will begin in August. Hope to see you before then. Blessings to you and yours, Carolyn Woods HURRICANE PLANNING AND RE-ENTRY In the event of an enforced evacuation, citizens and persons in the business community (business owners/managers, employees) and any individual attempting to make re-entry to the city will be required to have a Re-Entry Pass. Re-Entry Passes are available at City Hall and the Atlantic Beach Police Department, Mon-Fri, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Residents must provide a Photo ID with an Atlantic Beach address (utility bill, tax receipt or similar documentation may be used to confirm residency).
