Don’t Miss the End of SummerTwilight Movie at the Park
Join us at Donner Park on Saturday, September 26th for Atlantic Beach’s end of
summer outdoor movie under the stars to enjoy the showing of “The Penguins
of Madagascar”. The movie is free and open to the public. Bring a comfortable
chair and your favorite snack to enjoy. Movie starts at 8 pm. Children under 15
must be accompanied by an adult.
Back to School Safety Tips
Summertime is nearing an end and it is time to fall back into the Fall routine which
means school begins. With that in mind, your Atlantic Beach Police Department would
like to help with some friendly tips on how to keep your children safe.
• The most important thing to remember is to slow down when driving through
school zones and always pay attention to
posted speed limits. Many children walk to
and from school.
• Never pass a school bus when the lights are
flashing. These indicators let drivers know
that children are entering or exiting the bus.
• Parents or guardians are encouraged to walk
with their children, either to the bus stop or to school.
• Always talk to your kids about strangers. Help them get to know safe places or
people to run to along their route in the case of an emergency.
• Bike riders: Remember that kids under 17 years of age are required by law to
wear a helmet.
• Give your kids the proper rest. Put them to bed early and get them up early. This
will reduce stress and fatigue for everyone.
• And always remember, if you have any questions or concerns, contact your child’s
school. They are there to help.Family Fun Day & Campout Under the Stars
Mark your calendars! You will not want to
miss this popular event scheduled for Saturday,
October 17th at Jack Russell Park, 800 Seminole
Road, Atlantic Beach, FL. This year’s Family Fun
Day begins at noon and will feature activities
for the whole family to enjoy. The day concludes
with a bonfire and the showing of the movie
“Night at the Museum, Secret of the Tomb” at
dusk. All afternoon and evening events are free
and open to the public. Campers can reserve
a 10 x 10 camp site for a $10 fee, September
1-30 and $15 fee starting on october 1st through
the day of event. A free pancake breakfast is served on Sunday morning for overnight

World Water Monitoring Challenge
is an international education and
outreach program to raise awareness
about protecting water resources
around the world.
World Water Monitoring Day is September 18, but you can help monitor the condition of
local streams, lakes, rivers, estuaries and other water bodies from now through December
31, 2015. In 2013, a total of 184,965 visits were made by participants to monitoring
sites in 51 countries.
It’s easy to get involved. Just visit the website www.monitorwater.org, register the site
you wish to monitor and purchase a test kit ($22). The Basic Test Kit includes one set of
lab ware and enough chemicals to conduct up to 50 rounds of testing for pH, dissolved
oxygen, temperature, and turbidity.
Remember your days! Only irrigate on your days, before 10:00 a.m.
or after 4:00 p.m.

A Note from the Building Department
The Florida Building Code is mandated by the State, for all jurisdictions in Florida, and
is updated every three years. The new Florida Building Code, 5th Edition (2014) became
effective June 30, 2015. There are
nine volumes in the FBC, plus the
5th Edition Florida Fire Prevention
Code and the 2011 National Electric
Code. Changes were made in all
of the volumes including stricter
Energy Code requirements. The
FBC and other building topics can
be found online at www.floridabuilding.org
The basic wind and structural criteria have not changed. We are still in a 129 mph
Wind Zone and impact-resistant windows and doors are not required. Different Flood
Zones and Wind Exposure Categories can be found throughout the City. Ask your
architect or builder about these, or contact the Building Department at 247-5826.

Dear Neighbors
By now the elections have been decided, school has begun and the
City budget is our next top priority.
Budget workshops were held in August and the final budget must
be approved before October 1st. The proposed budget will be on the
agenda for the September 14th and September 28th commission
meetings. If you were unable to attend the budget meetings, videos
are available on our City website at www.coab.us. Please feel
free to contact the commission with any questions or concerns at
electedofficials@coab.us.
Recently, a proposal was brought before the Commission requesting
that the Post Office change the last line of the mailing addresses
from Atlantic Beach to Jacksonville for those properties which are
not within our City limits. Quite simply, there are people within the
32233 zip code area who live in Atlantic Beach and others who do not
live within the City’s boundaries. Sharing a zip code with the City of
Jacksonville has caused some confusion for business owners trying to
get a business license or building permit, and property owners seeking
services such as code enforcement, animal control, garbage and yard
waste collection and building permits from Atlantic Beach when they
should be contacting the City of Jacksonville. Perhaps the single most
important reason to clarify which City you live in is so that when you
call 911 the operator knows how to direct your call and emergency
responders know where to find you. There is no need to change any
stationary, bank information or anything like that. The post office will
still deliver your mail. The only difference will be that if you live within
the boundaries of Jacksonville, the last line of your mailing address
will say Jacksonville instead of Atlantic Beach.
Blessings to you and yours,
Carolyn Woods
