FDOT Repairing Atlantic Boulevard Bridge over
San Pablo River
The Florida Department of Transportation is currently conducting a bridge
painting and repair maintenance project on the Atlantic Boulevard Bridge. The
$2.6 million project includes cleaning and painting the steel beams, repairing
concrete on the piers beneath the bridge, repairing cracks in the road surface
and sealing joints. While the majority of work is being performed under
the bridge, traffic impacts on Atlantic Boulevard include a current shift for
eastbound traffic to accommodate painting equipment on top of the bridge.
Future project activities may require some nighttime lane closures from 8 pm
to 7 am. The estimated completion date of the maintenance project is by
summer 2015.
Motorists are reminded that while the speed limit of 45 mph is not reduced
during construction, speeding fines are doubled in construction work zones.
Meetings are held in the Commission Chamber unless otherwise indicated.
* These events will be held at Adele Grage Cultural Center, 716 Ocean Blvd.

Tips for Saving Water with
Your Hose
Squirting each other with the hose might feel good on
these hot, humid days. Here are some tips that can
save water and keep your water bill low:
Outfit your hose with an adjustable shut-off nozzle that will automatically close when
it’s released. When finished using the hose, shut it off at the faucet instead of the
nozzle to avoid leaks.
Check all hoses, connectors and spigots regularly and repair any leaks promptly. Use
hose washers between spigots and hoses to prevent leaks.
Turn your hose off while it is unattended.
When using a hose sprinkler for watering, be sure to set a timer to remind yourself to
turn it off.
Do not hose down driveways or sidewalks. Use a broom or blower to remove dirt or
debris.
If you wash your own car, park on pervious areas to do so. Consider having your car
washed at a commercial facility that recycles their water instead.
For more information on water conservation, check out the St. Johns River Water Management
District’s conservation website at www.floridaswater.com.
KNOW YOUR DAYS:
Irrigate only before 10:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m. and only on your days.

Atlantic Beach Police Department is Accepting
Applications
for Second Citizen Police Academy
The Police Department is seeking local residents who wish to participate in the
Citizen Police Academy to get an inside look at what an Atlantic Beach police
officer does. Classes will meet Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 pm beginning August
21st. The classes will cover a wide range of interactive topics including patrol,
criminal investigations, traffic enforcement, crime scene processing and firearms.
There will be a graduation ceremony held on November 6th for the participants.
If you are interested in attending the Citizen’s Police Academy, e-mail Sgt. Ed Peck at
epeck@coab.us or contact him at (904) 247-5859 for an application packet and more
information.
Back to school safety
School will be back in session on August 18th
and that means the “School Zones” will be
activated on Seminole Road and Sherry Drive
during the designated times: 7:45 AM -9:00 AM
and 2:30-3:30 PM. The afternoon hours vary
slightly two Wednesday’s per month, when
school is released an hour earlier. During
the posted times, the speed limit is 15 miles per hour in the designated areas and is
strictly enforced. Traffic fines are doubled in school zones. There is also a crossing guard
posted at the intersection of Seminole and Seaspray, and in the 200 block of Sherry
Drive – directly in front of the elementary school. When the crossing guard enters the
intersection to stop vehicle traffic, vehicles are required to stop AT THE TRAFFIC CONES,
which are placed on the roadway. Vehicles should not pull up to the cross walk, as this
endangers the safety of the pedestrians. Please help keep everyone safe this school year
and do your part to abide by the laws in the school zones.

Every year dogs die because their owners leave them
in parked cars while shopping or running errands.
Even “just a few minutes” can be too much. Here
are some facts to consider:
• Dogs don’t sweat. The only ways they can cool themselves are
through panting and the pads of their feet.
• Animals can suffer from heat stroke in just 15 minutes. Heat
stroke causes heart problems, nerve damage, brain damage, liver
damage and/or death.
• Snub-nosed dogs (like boxers and pugs), double coated dogs
(like huskies and shepherds), and older dogs are even more likely
to overheat.
• When it is 78° outside, the internal temperature of a car can
reach 90° in 5 minutes, and 110° in 20 minutes.
• Studies show that “cracking the windows” has little effect on the
internal temperature of the car.
• The sun moves. A car parked in the shade can be in partial or full
sun within a short period of time, causing the car to heat up even
faster.
Please leave your dog at home during the warmer months – it’s not worth the risk
to his health. If you see a dog locked in a car call the police department immediately
Dear Neighbors,
For the past few weeks I have been traveling and have had an
opportunity to visit many, many dear friends and relatives along the
way. The people and places are all very nice for sure, but nothing beats
having Atlantic Beach to come home to.
Of course, every place has its pros and cons. Although Atlantic Beach
has mostly pros, I hope you’ll join me in trying to turn one possible
con, the limited Town Center parking, into a pro by trying to walk or
ride your bike into town when you can. How wonderful it is to be able
to stop under one of the big shady trees along the way and chat with
your friends and neighbors. This ability to connect and engage within
the community is one of Atlantic Beach’s greatest “pros” and summer
is one of the easiest times to enjoy it. I know I do and hope I’ll see
you out and about throughout the year.
Blessings to you and yours,
Carolyn Woods
Seminole Road Improvements
The City has awarded a contract for engineering design for stormwater and streetscaping
improvements to Seminole Road from Atlantic Blvd to the 5-Way Intersection. The corridor
is currently being surveyed to identify existing conditions. This survey will form base drawings
showing existing trees, utilities, sidewalks, plantings and similar features to allow design
work to begin. Improvements will likely extend from right-of-way to right-of-way and
include landscaping and sidewalk(s). Stormwater ponding will be minimized. Once the
design is approximately 30% completed, a neighborhood meeting will be held in order for
the City to obtain feedback from local residents. If residents have any questions prior to the
neighborhood meeting, please contact Public Works at (904) 247-5834.
Chat with the Chief!
Thursday, August 14th 6:00 pm -6:30 pm in the Commission ChambersCome sit down for an informal chat with Chief Mike Classey! This is a great time to get to know your Police Chief – stop by for a visit - bring your questions, comments or concerns.
