The City of Atlantic Beach has several volunteer boards and committees that provide a valuable service to the operations of the City. Citizens who are interested in serving their community through volunteer service are encouraged to complete a Board and Committee Member application which can be obtained from the City Clerk’s Office or from the City’s website: www. coab.us. Volunteers are needed to serve on the Code Enforcement Board, Community Development Board, Cultural Arts and Recreation Advisory Committee, two Pension Boards, one for police employees and the other for general employees, and a Board Member Review Committee. For more information about the responsibilities of these boards and committees, please contact the City Clerk at 247-5809 or visit our website. In severe storms, if trees fall on top of homes or roofs are partially torn, plumbing can break and make damages even worse. So be sure to include this step in your checklist. Also, after a hurricane or tropical storm, a boil water notice may be issued. If the electricity is out and you are unable to boil your water, there are some alternate disinfection methods for water used for drinking, cooking and brushing teeth: • Add about 1/8 teaspoon unscented household bleach to a gallon of water, mix, and let stand for 30 minutes before use. • Add 20 drops of tincture of iodine to each gallon of water, mix and let stand for 30 minutes before use. • Purchase commercially available water disinfecting tablets. These are usually available in stores that sell camping and hiking supplies. In addition, you may want to keep a supply of bottled water available during hurricane season. Let’s hope for an easy hurricane season! Remember – Water only on your assigned two days per week, before 10:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m. Homes with ODD addresses – Wednesday and Saturday Homes with EVEN addresses – Thursday and Sunday Non-Residential – Tuesday and Friday For more information on how you can save water go to www.floridaswater.com FIRST CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY IS A SUCCESS THE MEMBERS OF THE ATLANTIC BEACH INAUGURAL CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY PROGRAM GRADUATED ON MAY 15TH. THIS ENTHUSIASTIC GROUP OF 27 RESIDENTS MET EVERY THURSDAY EVENING FOR 11 CONSECUTIVE WEEKS. THEY WERE INSTRUCTED ON A WIDE VARIETY OF POLICE TOPICS INCLUDING: PATROL, INVESTIGATIONS, CRIME SCENE PROCESSING, DEFENSIVE TACTICS, AND FIREARMS. THE POLICE DEPARTMENT IS ALREADY PLANNING THE 2ND CPA FOR LATER THIS YEAR. WE WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND A HUGE “THANK YOU” TO EACH OF THE CPA MEMBERS FOR THEIR DEDICATION TO THE PROGRAM AND CONTINUED SUPPORT OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT. CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ACHIEVEMENT! Recycling Changes All City recycled materials are being taken to the new Republic Services Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) located on Jacksonville’s Northside. This state of the art facility uses automation to process all recyclables through a single flow path. Single-stream recycling refers to a system in which all paper fibers, plastics, metals, and other containers are mixed in a collection truck, instead of being sorted by the depositor into separate commodities (newspaper, paperboard, corrugated fiberboard, plastic, glass, etc.) and handled separately throughout the collection process. In single-stream, both the collection and processing systems are designed to handle this fully commingled mixture of recyclables, with materials being separated for reuse at a materials recovery facility (MRF). As a result of this change in processing, Atlantic Beach residents no longer have to separate fiber materials from containers and may place all recyclables in a single container (or multiple containers containing mixed materials). In late Spring or early Summer, the City’s waste hauler, Advanced Disposal Systems, will be distributing new recycling toters, similar to the toters currently used for garbage, but only 64 gallons in size. All recyclable materials will go into this single container and will continue to be collected once a week on the same day as garbage and yard trash. F RO M T HE M AY O R UTILITY BILL PAYMENT OPTIONS EXPANDED In March, the City of Atlantic Beach implemented two new ways to pay your utility bill. You may now pay through our automated phone payment system or the City’s website using your debit or credit card (Visa, Master Card or Discover cards) or checking or savings account via e-check (EFT-electronic payment). These two new options were in response to customer requests for more convenience, flexibility, and security in the payment process: • Make payments 24/7 from your phone or computer • Eliminate waiting on hold or driving to City Hall and waiting in line • Reduce identify theft due to increased security Phone: Local: (904) 421-7347 Toll Free 1 - (844) 223-2737 (follow voice prompts) Web Payments: www.coab.us (click on “Utility Bill Payments” on the left-hand banner) The system allows you to store account information to reduce entry time for future payments, or you may make a one-time, single utility payment without creating a profile. Dear Neighbors, Summer is fast approaching; the school year will soon be ending and long awaited vacations happily starting. While the vacation may be short lived, your “stay-cations” can continue all summer long by making good use of and enjoying our fantastic sandy beach, serpentine marsh waterways and extensive park system. Did you know we have 14 distinct parks spread throughout Atlantic Beach? You can see an interactive map of our parks at www.coab.us by clicking on the" Things To Do" tab. There is also an Intracoastal Salt Marsh Paddling Guide. For those of you who would like to experience the marsh this way but don’t have a boat, there are kayak rentals available through Nautical Escapes Rentals and Tours at Dutton Island Preserve. Atlantic Beach is very proud of its efforts to make the beach safe and accessible for all. Our website has a chart of beach access points that offer ADA ramps and parking. Please call our Recreation Department at 247-5828 if you would like to use a specially designed beach wheel chair for your outing. During the summer, lifeguards and staff patrol the beach on a daily basis providing guidance and direction relative to hazardous conditions, marine animals, and first aid. Remember, parents are responsible for their children’s safety in the water at all times. In Bull Park our Mid-Week Farmers Market is in full swing. You will find fresh locally grown fruits and vegetables, local pastries, breads and condiments and even some art and craft items. There are still a few spaces available if you would like to be a vendor. Please come by for a visit Wednesday afternoons all year long from 3-6 pm. As you can see there is plenty of good family fun throughout the city - so get out there and enjoy! Blessings to you and yours, Carolyn Woods
