Dear Neighbors
Well, we have had a bit of unusually cold weather as of late and
I hope you and all of your plants, pets and pipes have faired well.
I’m proud to announce the Atlantic Beach Police Department is
taking applications for their Inaugural Citizen Police Academy, which
begins on March 6th. The classes will meet for ten consecutive
Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 pm and applications can be found
on the City website, www.coab.us. Please contact Sgt. Peck at
247-5589 ext. 19, if you would like more information or to sign
up. I applaud Chief Classey for initiating this program and all of
you who are involved. Our individual commitment to participating
in efforts such as this, for the common good, is what helps keep
this community such a great place to live.
Along the same vain, as I write this I will be starting weekly rides
with our Patrol Officers in order to be a better-informed advocate
for our Police Facility Renovation Project. I’m hoping other
Commissioners will also go for “ride alongs” to gather insight into
the true needs of the department for their Headquarters. I’ll keep
you posted on the progress of both.
In the coming months we will be moving into strategic planning and
the budgeting process. Please feel free to contact the Commission at
electedofficials@coab.us with your insight, input and innovations.
Together, we can continue to make the changes in Atlantic Beach
positive, healthy and lasting.
Blessings to you and yours,
Carolyn Woods

Our Duval County Extension office has a wealth of information and offers
several environmental programs on their Solutions for Your Life website.
At http://duval.ifas.ufl.edu/ you’ll find information on creating a backyard
wildlife habitat, urban gardening, and becoming a master gardener among
many other programs. In addition, the Florida Yards and Neighborhoods
Program helps you learn about Florida-Friendly Landscaping (FFL),
which helps to conserve water and reduce pollution. You can watch a
presentation on the 9 FFL Principles, including Right Plant/Right Place and
Water Efficiently.
The site contains many free guides to download. You can also sign up
for the free e-newsletter, A New Leaf, which is full of gardening and
landscaping tips.

The City of Atlantic Beach wishes to thank the Beaches community for making
the Holiday Gift Tree and Toy Drive for local children a tremendous success.
At the Donner Park Christmas party held on Saturday, December 21st, over
200 children received gifts due to the generosity and caring of our beaches
community. Thank you one and all for giving so many children a joyous
holiday season.

his program “Warm Fuzzies and Prehistoric Pals”. Kids can experience one-
on-one encounters with turtles, snakes, small mammals and reptiles. Dance,
