F RO M T HE M AY O R SAFETY CAMPAIGN IN ATLANTIC BEACH The outdoor lifestyle is a big part of our beach community. This means a lot of cyclists and pedestrians are out and about in our neighborhoods daily. Unfortunately, the number of car accidents involving bicyclists and pedestrians has grown each year. The City of Atlantic Beach Police Department has partnered with the North Florida Traffic Planning Organization to create the safety campaign: “Yield to Life – LOOK ALL WAYS”. This educational campaign focuses on bicycle and pedestrian safety and is initially being emphasized at the following four main Atlantic Boulevard intersections: Sherry Drive, Seminole Road, Sailfish Drive and Royal Palms. After analyzing the past several years’ worth of crash data, it is apparent that many different factors have been the cause of bicycle and pedestrian involved crashes. The results show that about half of the time, crashes are the fault of the motorist and the other half is due to errors by bicyclists and pedestrians. Watch for a safety campaign flyer in your next utility bill or check out the City’s website at www.coab.us for additional information. You can also contact Cmdr. Tiffany Layson at (904) 247-5859 or tlayson@coab.us for information. HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE REMOTE COLLECTION EVENTS Did you get busy last year and forget to bring your hazardous waste to the City of Jacksonville’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection held annually at the beaches? If so, the City of Jacksonville’s Solid Waste Division offers a way for you to dispose of the materials accumulating in your garage throughout the year. You can drop-off materials at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility located at 2675 Commonwealth Avenue on Tuesday through Saturday from 8 am to 5 pm. For more information call Jacksonville’s Solid Waste Division at (904) 387-8847. A complete list of items that will be accepted is located on the COJ website at www.coj.net. Mark your calendars! The next household hazardous waste collection at the beaches will be held on Saturday, May 11th from 9 am to 3 pm at the City of Jacksonville Beach Public Works Facility parking lot (1460 Shetter Ave). ENERGY SAVINGS JEA Representatives recently met with some of our City staff and asked “what had been done differently to reduce the electric usage in recent months?” They provided graphs that showed that the volume of power used had been lower every month in 2012 than for the same months in 2011 and that the decrease in power usage was growing larger every month. You might find the answer interesting. Atlantic Beach recently completed two major projects that will result in long term savings in both electricity and gasoline usage. During 2012, the City used federal and state funding from two energy grants to pay 100% of the cost to replace 18 HVAC units in City buildings, replace and upgrade the lighting in two City ball fields and to purchase an all-electric vehicle for the Police Department. The City spent over $300,000 on the energy retrofits and expects an annual electric and fuel savings from this project of $55,000 per year. A second, and even larger, energy related project completed in 2012 was the consolidation of the City’s two wastewater plants into one and upgrading various motors, blowers and control equipment. This was primarily designed to meet the new nitrogen standards for the St. Johns River, but our engineers also found ways to save a lot of power. With all the new equipment now online, we expect to save about $230,000 per year in power costs for wastewater treatment. Working to reduce future energy consumption is just one of the ways that your City is working to remain financially stable for the long term and continue to provide the high levels of services that you deserve. These two energy projects should specifically help keep the tax rates and water and sewer charges down for many years to come. –Mike Borno EASTER EGG HUNT Bring the little ones for a classic Easter Egg Hunt at beautiful Jordan Park on Saturday, March 30th from 10 am to 1 pm.
