GET TO KNOW YOUR H2O
We sometimes take our drinking water for granted. But without it, we wouldn’t
have the wonderful quality of life we all enjoy. Safe, dependable drinking
water delivered right to your tap for less than a penny per gallon. Only tap
water provides the critical combination to protect the public health, douse
fires, and support the economy.
Celebrate Drinking Water Week from May 20 through May 26 this year
by conserving this precious resource. The theme of the 2013 Drinking Water
Week is “Get to Know Your H2O.”
Remember Your Days: Irrigate only on your days before 10:00 a.m. or
after 4:00 p.m.
Odd numbered addresses: Wednesday and Saturday
Even numbered addresses: Thursday and Sunday
Non-Residential: Tuesday and Friday

STRATEGIC PLANNING
For the last 14 years the Atlantic Beach Commission has held a
series of workshops to determine what our strategic plan will be
for the coming year. This is a chance for us to look at the “big
picture” and discuss long term projects, plans and aspirations for
our community. Normal City Commission meetings deal with the
day to day aspects of operating a City government and we seldom
have time to discuss long term future issues.
These workshops are held in the spring so that the goals can be used
to guide the budget preparation for the next year. The strategic
plan also serves as a guide to regularly refocus attention after the
normal daily affairs of the City are taken care of.
Some of the goals included in our strategic plan have been ongoing
and others are new. The ongoing goals include resolving the issue
of paying landfill “tipping” fees to the City of Jacksonville, working
with the Selva Marina Country Club Board to ensure that changes
they are undergoing will also maintain green space in the future
and limit traffic impact, and we hope to finally find a solution
for providing adequate facilities for our police officers to work in.
Several new goals are also included in the Plan. One of these is
to create a Parks Master Plan that will identify both the current
and needed recreation facilities in our community that residents
both desire and are willing to pay for. Finding ways to fund the
improvements for public access to the River Branch Preserve that
were identified in our Marsh Master Plan will also be a subject of
considerable attention over the next year. Improving the Mayport
Road corridor remains a goal, but we plan to move beyond the crime
reduction code enforcement strategies that have been successful
in past years to a focus on economic redevelopment. Specifically,
we want to find effective methods to bring in more family-oriented
businesses and housing.
You can read the entire strategic plan on the City’s website. It
includes both a description of the goals set by the City Commission
as well as a spreadsheet outlining the tactical steps that the City
plans to achieve them. The spreadsheet will be updated quarterly so that
we can monitor the progress.
Through strategic planning and hard work, a lot has been accomplished
in our community in recent years and we intend to continue that progress
toward making Atlantic Beach the best place to live, work and play.
