Parks and recreation activities available in
atlantic beach
Atlantic Beach has a great variety of parks, community centers,
events and activities that are available to you to enjoy.
The City runs three different community centers: Donner, Jordan and
Adele Grage. After school and summer programs are available for
kids at both the Donner and Jordan Centers. A community theater
group puts on a series of plays at the Adele Grage Center and
all three centers are available for rental for private parties. For
availability and booking, call the Recreation Office at 247-5828.
We have a great variety and number of parks in our small City.
These range from the beach on one side of the island to three
different preserves on the other and lots of other parks in between.
We have parks with ball fields and organized Little League, a skate
park, soccer fields, numerous playgrounds and tennis courts. The
passive parks range from those that are mostly undeveloped like
Howell and Johansen to others with local playgrounds which include
Bull, Rose, Jordan and Veterans Parks.
The City also offers, either directly through City programs or through
contracts with other agencies, a variety of activities. Active sports
include Little League and Flag Football, local running races, walks
with naturalists, yoga and tennis. More passive activities include
watching plays (both indoor and outdoor), live music, art shows
and sales, a weekly farmer’s market, and several community
festivals throughout the year. There are always opportunities for
volunteers to help.
How do you find out what’s going on or how to volunteer? The
City’s website, coab.us, has both a detailed calendar of events
with times, locations and descriptions, as well as maps to all City
parks. Through the website, you can sign up to receive e-mails to
notify you of upcoming events. The Recreation and Special Events

how to save Money on rainy days
Autumn is typically a wet season in our area. Use rainy days to lower your
water bill by making sure your irrigation system is working properly.
• Use sensors to prevent irrigating in the rain or when the ground is already
saturated. Rain sensors are shut-off devices that interrupt irrigation when
it’s raining. Soil moisture sensors are more complex, but keep the irrigation
system from running when there’s sufficient moisture in the ground. A study
by Michael Dukes, Ph.D., for Turf Magazine shows soil moisture sensors to
be more effective, reducing irrigation time by up to 65%.
• Power flickers and outages often mess up the programming on irrigation
systems. If you have an automatic system, always check the settings after
lightning storms where electrical power is interrupted.
• Adjust your irrigation timers for seasonal changes in weather—
manually or with a Smart Controller. A Smart Controller can be programmed
to allow for changes in water needs throughout the year. Some even have
their own weather stations and moisture sensors to adjust irrigation to specific
conditions.
reMeMber, only irrigate on your assigned days
before 10:00 a.M. or after 4:00 P.M. during october.

iMPortant facts to consider before getting a
new Pet
Adding a pet to your family circle is a great way to bring a meaningful
relationship to your life and to that of the animal, especially if you adopt
from a rescue facility. However, before you make that decision here are
some important factors to consider.
Pets are expensive. Ensure that you can afford to care for them. This
includes food, training, supplies, vaccinations and regular vet care.
Pets are time consuming. Ensure that you and your family members
have the time to take care of it. Does your work and personal schedule
allow for quality time with an animal?
Pets are a long term commitment. Ensure you are willing to make a
long term commitment both time wise and financially. Puppies and kittens
lose their cuteness quickly. Are you willing to go through adolescence and
geriatrics as well?
Pets are social creatures. They need to be part of the family. Don’t
get one if you are only going to tie it up, put it outside or leave it in a
cage all the time.
Pets can be annoying. Ensure you are willing to train and socialize it. A
bored animal will bark, howl, dig, chew, jump, poop, spray and can irritate
the neighbors, not to mention you.
Pets should be spayed or neutered. An intact animal may be more
aggressive and exhibit annoying hormone-related behaviors. Cats will
yowl, fight and spray, whereas dogs will jump fences and roam.
Pets are a liability. Ensure that you are allowed to have pets where you
live. Inquire about additional insurance requirements for certain breeds.
Not all landlords, homeowners associations or insurance companies will
accept your pets, especially if their viewed as a aggressive breed or exotic.
Consider what you will do with your new pet if you have to move.
Pets can be a wonderful addition to your life, bringing joy, merriment and
unconditional love. For additional information, contact the Atlantic Beach
Animal Control Office at 247-5866.
Office also has a Facebook page which can be found at coab.us/facebook.
Get out and enjoy! These are provided to you as one of the many benefits
of living in Atlantic Beach.
