His world is packed with colorful characters starting with Ginger, his girl Friday; a studio head; a night club chanteuse; and a mentally unbalanced woman on a mission. Will he put the pieces of the puzzle together in time to solve it all or not in this tuneful and nostalgic tribute to film noir? This is good because every major expenditure of public funds should be looked at closely, especially in these difficult eco- nomic times. The City of Atlantic Beach has been looking into making police building improvements since 2005. Budgets have been approved and a lot of planning for a new building has been done over the terms of the last three mayors and 11 different commissioners. One thing that just about everyone who has toured the build- ing can agree on is that it is inadequate and improvements are needed. We have many very fine officers and staff in our police department, but they are not well supported by the building that we have provided for them. This is like sending officers to a drug bust without guns. Public concerns about this project have ranged from how large the police building should be to where to put it and how much money to spend. To help resolve these questions, a commit- tee of Atlantic Beach citizens has been appointed to study the situation and make recommendations. Specifically, they are looking at the operational inefficiencies created by the pres- ent police building, the impacts of those inefficiencies on the overall effectiveness of our police department, safety concerns related to the building and any potential liabilities. The Committee’s task is to recommend if the City should invest in new or remodeled facilities and, if so, where to put them and how large they should be. A nine week timetable has been set for completion of the Committee’s work which will end on April 26th. We greatly appreciate the men and women who have vol- unteered a considerable amount of their time and energy to serve on this Committee and look forward to receiving their recommendations. 7th Annual Bowl Bash Coming The City of Atlantic Beach’s 7th Annual Bowl Bash will be held on Saturday, May 12th beginning at noon at the Oceanside Rotary Skate Park. Registration opens on April 2nd. Participants who pre-register will receive a $5.00 discount. Fees are $20 for age groups and $40 for sponsored. Arts in the Park Make plans to attend the City of Atlantic Beach’s 9th Annual Arts in the Park event sponsored by the Atlantic Beach Cultural Arts and Recreation Advisory Committee on Saturday, April 28th from 10 am to 6 pm in Johansen Park. You will have the opportunity to meet the artists one-on-one and discover unique artworks for your home, family and friends. Pack a picnic lunch, grab your kids and come out to enjoy the day. Enjoy an Evening of Shakespeare The University of North Florida’s Department of Eng- lish and the City of Atlantic Beach are partnering to present “Much Ado about Nothing” – one of Shake- speare’s better-known comedies – adapted by Pamela Monteleone, Ph.D. Shakespeare’s play comes to Jack Russell Park on Friday, April 20th and Saturday, April 21st. Live music begins at 7:30 pm with the perfor- mance at 8 pm. Bring a chair or blanket and come out to enjoy an evening of Shakespeare on an open stage under the stars. In case of rain, an additional performance will be offered on Sunday, April 22nd. For more information about the performance, call Linda Ginsberg at (904) 246-4061. Help Protect Our Sea Turtles The City of Atlantic Beach would like to remind every- one that turtle nesting season takes place from May 1st through October 31st. Please help protect their safety by keeping our beaches as dark as possible during the nesting season. For more information on sea turtle nests you can contact the Beaches Sea Turtle Patrol at (904) 613-6081 or visit their website at www.bstp.net. April is Water Conservation Month Floridians celebrate Water Conservation Month in April because it is often one of the driest months of the year. April is also a month where water usage increases as people begin their outdoor landscaping activities. Water is our most precious natural resource—so let’s highlight the month of April by paying special attention to how we use water. Make a special effort to use some simple solutions to saving water: • This is the perfect time to check your irrigation system for leaks. Check the timer settings as well, and make sure the moisture sensors are working properly. • Plant some drought-tolerant plants. • Install a low flow shower head. • Wait for full loads before using the dishwasher or washing machine. • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving. Remember your days for irrigation – and only water when needed, before 10:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m. • Odd Addresses – Wednesday and Saturday • Even Addresses – Thursday and Sunday • Non-Residential – Tuesday and Friday For more information on conserving water, go to www.FloridasWater.com.
