ABET Presents…Fetterhoff For Hire Book and lyrics by Richard Wolf Music and lyrics by Gene Nordan March 23, 24 *25, 30, 31 and April *1, 5, 6, and 7, 2012 It’s 1946, in LA, WWII is over and private eye, Harry Fetterhoff, faces the most puzzling case of his career; a client with a dual personality, a murder that reaches into the highest echelons of the film industry and clues that seem to go nowhere. His world is packed with colorful characters starting with Ginger, his girl Friday; a studio head; a night club chanteuse; and a mentally unbalanced woman on a mission. Will he put the pieces of the puzzle together in time to solve it all or not in this tuneful and nostalgic tribute to film noir? Most of you just want to know that the garbage will be picked up on time, that the water will flow when you open the faucet and that Police and fire will be there quickly if needed. Boring as it may be, it takes a lot of long- term planning and perseverance to see that everything works when needed. Making sure that the storm water flows away without flooding streets or houses is one of those long- term, mostly unnoticed City responsibilities… until big rainstorms or hurricanes arrive. some of you will remember 10 to 12 years ago when many of our streets had to be barricaded during normal rainstorms. However, the City brought in consultants to prepare a master plan to identify ways to solve the problems and those have been designed and built in recent years. since then, street flooding has become rare in our City. while our drainage systems work much better than they did, there are still some areas to be addressed and we need an up-to-date, long range plan to know where to best invest our scarce resources. An updated master plan is being completed and will be presented to the City Commission before you read this article. it will address the few remaining areas where we have some water left on streets after heavy rains, concerns over the level of maintenance the City provides for some of our drainage ditches, requests from various neighborhoods to add piping systems to replace the original swells and it will even provide an assessment of current scientific research to determine if increases in sea level should be considered as we design new drainage systems for the future. As soon as it is presented, this report will be available for the public to review. for the vast majority of neighbors who don’t want to know the details, you can rest assured that the City is taking care of routine business. AddRESS Homes with odd-numbered addresses Homes with even-numbered addresses Non-residential properties IRRIgATIOn dAYS Wednesday and Saturday Thursday and Sunday Tuesday and Friday Mid-week MARket is oPeN the City of Atlantic Beach Mid-week Market is held every wednesday from 3 to 6 pm at Bull Park, which is located between ocean Boulevard and east Coast drive at 7th street. this weekly outdoor market features fresh locally-grown produce and healthy foods. stop by and check it out. you will be pleasantly surprised at all the wonderful offerings. Bring your grocery bags, baskets and carts so you can stock up. BiCyCle ANd PedestRiAN sAfety Bicycle and pedestrian safety continues to be an important topic in Atlantic Beach. According to national traffic statistics, the state of florida has the highest number of pedestrian deaths per year. experts contribute this to three main causes; rapid population growth, tourism, and climate. it is important to recognize that traffic safety is a responsibility shared by all road users. Pedestrians need to use sidewalks for traveling and should take care to only cross at designated cross walks and make eye contact with vehicle drivers before crossing in front of them. driver distraction is often a culprit in pedestrian crashes, and drivers are urged to stop texting or talking on their phones and watch for pedestrians and bicycles as well as other vehicle traffic when driving. Alcohol is often a factor in pedestrian and bicycle crashes; either in one or both of the parties involved. Be alert! Be safe! dAyligHt sAViNgs tiMe - CHeCk youR sMoke deteCtoRs As a reminder, daylight savings time begins at 2 a.m. on sunday, March 11th. set your clocks one hour ahead. Remembering to change your clock for daylight savings time is also a great opportunity to give some attention to the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home. Replace batteries in your battery powered detectors once a year, and test them at least monthly throughout the year. detectors that are part of a built-in fire alarm system should be tested as part of the fire alarm test and maintenance schedule prescribed by the manufacturer. it is also recommended that all detectors be given a good dusting and vacuum cleaning every six months. Atlantic Beach recycling includes metal cans of all types, all paper products and plastics labeled 1 through 7. if you have any questions about recycling, contact the Public works department at 247-5834. iRRigAtioN dAys CHANge witH dAyligHt sAViNgs tiMe Just a reminder – beginning March 11, 2012, when daylight savings time begins, irrigation is allowed two days per week.
