Marsh Master Plan
Public ownership and access to the waterways on both
sides of our island has been a major goal for Atlantic
Beach for several years. The purchase of 350 acres of
marshlands a few years ago connected the City’s two
marsh front parks; the Tideviews and Dutton Island
Preserves. The next step was to plan for opening up
the property to low impact public usage like fishing,
kayaking, or just watching the sunset.
Over the last year, consultants with considerable
experience in opening sensitive natural areas to
public usage have been working to prepare a Marsh
Master Plan for Atlantic Beach. One of their main tasks
was to get public input on desired amenities through
several public forums including the “MarshFest” last fall.
Considerable and enthusiastic input was received from
both individuals and groups. Some of the most popular
items recommended in the Plan include a public trail
between the Tideviews and Dutton Island Preserves
which will include marsh front views and scenic
overlooks, expanding the camping, picnic and bathroom
facilities on Tideviews and Dutton Island Preserves,
additional kayak launches and better access to drop off
kayaks at various sites.
Although the Master Plan is completed and has been ap-
proved, the recommended projects will take many years
to accomplish and will require support from public and
private agencies as well as many individuals. However, I
hope that you will agree that the newly opened “Sunset
Pier” at Tideviews is a great start toward providing public
access to our western waterfront.
You can read the entire Master Plan online by looking at
the link on the City’s website; www.coab.us.
HURRICANE CLEANUP
Post Storm Yard Trash and Debris Pickup
Precedence will be given to waste that is bagged or
otherwise containerized or already cut to the normal
size for pickup. Leaves and clippings should be placed
behind the curb in plastic barrels, boxes or disposable
plastic or waterproof paper bag. Tree trunks, stumps,
limbs, and trimmings will be collected; these items
should be cut to approximately four (4) feet in length
or less than forty (40) pounds for thick trunk segments.
To protect the drainage systems, streets and other pub-
lic property, please do not place trees, limbs, and other
debris in the roadway or medians. The debris should be
placed next to the roadway, and not in the street where
it will obstruct drainage.
Yard debris may not be placed on vacant lots, City
medians, parks, drainage easements or unpaved right-
of-ways. These are considered to be illegal dumps, are
subject to a fine and delay pick-up of debris. Residents
living along streets with separate medians (e.g. Plaza,
Selva Marina, Saturiba, and other roads in the Selva
Norte and Oceanwalk areas) are reminded they are to
place their waste on their side of the street, not in the
medians.
NOTICE: If a Tree Trimming Contractor, Lawn Service
Provider or other professional is hired by a private ho-
meowner to remove trees and/or limbs, the Contractor
is responsible for removing the resulting debris. Private
contractors are not allowed to simply place the debris
at the curb to be removed by the City. There will be no
cleanup efforts by FEMA in the City of Atlantic Beach.
All public debris removal efforts will be under the control
and direction of the City’s Public Works Department.
DANCIN’ IN THE STREET Saturday, May 19th 11:00 am – 9:00 pm
Come out and celebrate with your family at the 26th Annual Dancin’ in the Streets. This one day festival is a family-
friendly event held in the Beaches Town Center at the ocean end of Atlantic Boulevard. A KIDS ZONE, sponsored
by 200 FIRST STREET, will offer lots of activities, games, rides and snacks in an alcohol free area. An art show will
feature local and regional artists with talents in painting, jewelry, handcrafted glass, pottery, wood carvings and
more. Several local restaurants will have food booths set up for your enjoyment. There will be music on the Ocean
Stage featuring nine bands starting at noon and running until 9 pm. A second stage will be located in the Art Show
area at the corner of First Street and Orange Street in Neptune Beach with music beginning at 11:30 until 6:00.
Parking will be limited so plan to walk, bike or ride the trolley to the event. Pets, skateboards, bikes and coolers
will not be allowed in the festival area. For more information contact Patsy Bishop at 246-9133.
HURRICANE PLANNING AND RE-ENTRY
In the event of an enforced evacuation, citizens and persons in the business community (business owners/
managers, employees) and any individual attempting to make re-entry to the city will be required to have a
Re-Entry Pass. Re-Entry Passes are available at City Hall and the Atlantic Beach Police Department, Mon-Fri,
8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Residents must provide a Photo ID with an Atlantic Beach address (utility bill, tax receipt or simi-
lar documentation may be used to confirm residency). Re-entry passes that have been distributed to
Atlantic Beach residents during the past several years will remain valid and do not need to be replaced.
Business Community individuals not living in Atlantic Beach must provide a Photo ID and proof that they own,
manage or are employed in Atlantic Beach (employees may present a payroll check or statement along with a
request by the owner/manager for the individual to be issued a re-entry pass).
Check Your Irrigation System to Save Water and Money
If you haven’t already done so, now is a great time to check your irrigation system. Follow these steps to
conserve water and save on your monthly water bill:
4 Make sure your backflow preventer is tested by a certified tester.
4 Run your entire irrigation system zone by zone—
• Check for leaks, damaged sprinkler heads or piping and repair if needed.
• Check the spray patterns and adjust to make sure you aren’t watering the asphalt or driveway.
• Make sure the rain shutoff device or soil moisture sensor is working, so your system won’t come on in
the rain.
•Check the timers to ensure watering only during time periods allowed.
Remember your days! Irrigate only on your designated day, before 10:00 a.m. and after 4:00 p.m. For more
information on how to conserve, go to www.FloridasWater.com.
