Teaching Kids about Saving Water
The kids are back in school—but they keep learning after the day’s last school bell.
There’s no better place for children to learn the importance of water conservation
than right at home.
The St. Johns river Water Management District (SJrWMD) has some fantastic
resources for kids. Not only are there numerous publications, including coloring
books, activity books and posters, there are also interactive web-based educational
games and learning activities. The site includes Science Fair ideas as well.
If students need help writing a report or research paper, the SJRWMD site has a link
to “Ask a Science expert” that includes almost every kind of scientist. There’s even
an “Ask a Mad Scientist” link! To access this material, go to www.SJRWMD.com
and click on “Teachers and Students” or “Publications and Videos.”
Remember, only irrigate on your assigned days before 10:00
a.m. or after 4:00 p.m.

Yard Waste Reminder
Residents are reminded of the following guidelines regarding yard waste:
- To protect the drainage systems, streets and other public property, please
do not place trees, limbs and other debris in the roadway or medians. The
debris should be placed next to the roadway and not in the street where it
will obstruct drainage.
- Yard debris may not be placed on vacant lots, City medians, parks, drainage
easements or unpaved right-of-ways. These are considered to be illegal
dumps, are subject to a fine and delayed pick-up of debris.
- residents living along streets with separate medians (e.g. Plaza, Selva
Marina, Saturiba, and other roads in the Selva Norte and Oceanwalk areas)
are reminded they are to place their waste on their side of the street, not in
the medians.
NOTICE: If a Tree Trimming Contractor, Lawn Service Provider or other
professional is hired by a private homeowner to remove trees and/or
limbs, the Contractor is responsible for removing the resulting debris.
Private contractors are not allowed to simply place the debris at the
curb to be removed by the City or the City’s Solid Waste Contractor.
Dogs on the Beach
Atlantic beach is undoubtedly the most dog-friendly beach in Duval County. Dogs
are allowed on our beach at any time. To reduce problems between 2-legged and
4-legged visitors, certain rules apply. Please be aware that:
• leashes are always required on the beach regardless of the animal’s
temperament, time of day, or how many people are on the beach.
• All dogs must have current rabies vaccinations. Ab pet licenses and tags
were required in the past, but are no longer required.
• A dog must be tethered to a fixed object or held by someone strong
enough to control the dog. A dog running down the beach dragging his
leash behind him is not considered “leashed.”
• leashes must be of a material strong enough to hold the dog and cannot
be more than 12 feet long. A dog allowed to wander on a 20-foot lead
is not considered properly leashed.
• For a dog’s safety, it may be unleashed if both dog and owner are
swimming in the ocean (not tide pools). Dogs must be returned to a
leash before exiting the water, so please carry leashes to the water with
you. Dogs who become so excited that they cannot stay in the water, or
keep running in and out of the water, should not be allowed off leash.
Instead, please take them to the Dog Park where they are free to run.
Our ordinances specifically prohibit walking dogs unleashed in the
water.
• Owners must pick up after their dogs. burying or kicking sand over feces
is not sufficient. For convenience, bags and garbage cans are provided
at most public beach accesses.
Exact verbiage of ordinances can be seen on the City webpage at www.coab.
us. Please direct any questions to the Atlantic beach Animal Control at (904)
247-5866.
Family Fun Day & Campout Under the Stars
Mark your Calendars! You don’t want to miss this popular annual event scheduled
for Saturday, October 20th at Jack russell Park. This year’s Family Fun Day begins
on Saturday at noon and will feature activities for the whole family to enjoy. The
day concludes with a bonfire and movie at dusk. All afternoon and evening events
are free and open to the public. Bring your blankets, chairs, picnic baskets, bug
spray and spend the day!
The cost of each campsite is $10.00 (includes fire ring and wood) and pre-registration
is required. A free breakfast is served in the a.m. for our overnight campers. Campers
can register at the recreation Office, 716 Ocean blvd. Call 247-5828 for more
information or visit www.coab.us/events for a schedule of events.
Community Volunteers
I want to take this opportunity to thank all the great volunteers who serve
on the City’s various citizen boards and committees. Volunteers serve a
vital role in our community.
If you are interested in serving on one of our many volunteer boards or
committees, check out the City’s website to learn about the responsibilities
of committee members. The City has a Code Enforcement Board, a
Community Development Board, a Cultural Arts and Recreation Advisory
Committee, a Board Member Review Committee, and two Pension Boards,
one for Police Officers and the other for general employees. Each of the
boards and committees has specific terms of office, with meetings held
monthly or quarterly. You will work side-by-side with other civic-minded
citizens who take an active role contributing to the development of their
community.
All the volunteers who serve our local schools in the classrooms and the
PTSA’s also deserve our appreciation. The numerous hours, expertise and
dedication they have put into various school projects have enabled our
schools to provide a great education for our children. Our children today
are the future leaders of tomorrow.
Appreciation is also due to all the great volunteer groups and organizations
that support and nurture our citizens in their daily lives. Your involvement
has made our City a great place to live.
