Core City
Storm drainage
work has
proceeded
on 3rd Street
and new
water services
are being con-
nected on 1st Street.
East Coast Drive is being
completed from 3rd to 5th
Street. Recently, 8th Street
was paved. The remaining
streets to be started
include Ahern, 2nd, 4th,
and 6th Streets, and the
south end of East Coast
Drive. Near the completion
of the project, Sherry Drive
will receive its final overlay
and permanent striping.
Dewees/Coquina/
Shell/Coral
New storm drainage lines,
subgrade and paving work
were recently completed
on Dewees Avenue,
Coquina Place, Shell
and Coral Streets. The
completion of this project
will eliminate the need for
continual maintenance of
these roads after every
major rainstorm, and is
an enhancement to the
neighborhood.
Ocean Boulevard
The new 8" water line on
Ocean Boulevard, from
Ahern to 8th Street, is
now complete, and the
new services are being
connected. The roadway
will be milled and then
receive its final surface
course. The completion
date for the project is
July 15, 2003.
New Park Land
Acquisition
The city has just taken
title to a piece of land at
the intersection of Mayport
Road and Atlantic
Boulevard. Recreational
equipment will be installed
to establish another small
park in the Marsh Oaks
area. This fits into the
city’s planned expansion
of recreational facilities.

POOL YOUR WATER
RESOURCES
Summer is here and it’s
time to enjoy the pool and/or
outdoor spa. Unfortunately,
some of our valuable water
resources evaporate in the
hot sunshine, or lost through
unrepaired leaks.
Using a cover for the pool or
spa not only saves water, but
can save on hard labor to
remove leaves and debris
that can fall or blow into the
pool. Fixing leaks promptly
can result in savings on the
water bill, and prevent even
costlier repairs later.
For more information on how
to conserve water, check out
the St. Johns River Water
Management District's web-
sites: www.sjrwmd.com and
www.floridaswater.com.
DUTTON ISLAND
PRESERVE
Dutton Island Preserve is the
City’s largest and newest park
located at the end of Dutton
Drive, west of Mayport Road.
Dutton Island is a passive park
that consists of nature trails,
fishing and viewing pier, a
canoe/kayak launch, picnic
areas, pavilions, camping areas,
parking and a restroom facility.
HURRICANE
RE-ENTRY PASSES
Hurricane Re-entry Passes
were mailed to all Atlantic
Beach citizens in 2002. These
passes have an issue date of
“02,” and they are still valid.
New passes have been printed
with an “03” on them, but the
old ones do not need to be
replaced.
If you have not
received a pass, or
if the previous pass has been
misplaced, then a new re-
entry pass may be obtained
at the Atlantic Beach Police
Department or Atlantic Beach
City Hall.
HAZADOUS WASTE
COLLECTION
Don’t forget the hazardous
waste collection in the parking
lot between City Hall and Jack
Russell Park from 8:30 a.m. to
3:00 p.m. on July 20.
Do you have an old guitar in the back of
the closet? Would you like to sing a song
for your Atlantic Beach neighbors? Then
you’ll want to circle the date of July 20 on
your calendar. From 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
the City of Atlantic Beach (Cultural Arts and
Recreation Advisory Committee) will host
an acoustic night of music under the stars
for Atlantic Beach residents. The event will
take place on the lawn of the Adele Grage
Cultural Center (inside the center if the
weather does not cooperate).
Veteran songwriter and entertainer
Mike Shackelford will be our host for this
evening of fun. Shackelford will open
and close the evening with his own brand
of music. Nine Atlantic Beach residents
will have the chance to perform for the
audience with up to five minutes of
music. You can do an original song or
an oldie goldie. A simple phone call will
get your name on the evening's lineup.
This is an acoustic event. No electric
guitars, drums or bands please. It will be
first come, first served. So don't hesitate.
Find that guitar…register for the lineup…
grab the lawn chair and blankets…walk
or ride to a family night under the stars.
Planning on attending? Here’s what you
need to know:
· When:Sunday, July 20 from 6:00 p.m.
to 8:00 p.m.
· Where:Adele Grage Cultural Center on
the corner of 7th Street and Ocean
· Who:Atlantic Beach residents
· How to get on the lineup:Call Steve

As always, please be respectful of our
neighbors and the wonderful facility.

E LECTION - OCTOBER 7, 2003
Two City Commission seats and the Mayor/Commissioner seat will be up for election
on October 7. A complete election calendar will be posted on our web site at
www.ci.atlantic-beach.fl.us.
Now is the time to make sure your voter registration is up to date and correct.
Please do not leave it to the last minute as the registration books will close 30 days
before the election and you will not be able to make any changes during this period.
You may request a duplicate voter's registration card by calling 630-1410.
Voter registration applications are available at City Hall, any public library, drivers'
license offices, state agencies that provide public assistance, and many other public
locations. If you have any questions, give us a call at 247-5809.
The City of Atlantic Beach is lucky to have
a dedicated staff, Commission and several
volunteer-run boards and committees. Citizen
involvement with our city goes a long way
towards making us special. The Commission
has term limits (8 years in succession) and
term limits are being established for boards and committees.
This will insure fresh ideas at all levels of government, but
does require that more citizens be willing to serve. The process
of local government is often not “pretty” or “neat,” but it works
given continued interest by its citizenry. We will have several
Commission seats coming up for election this fall, and opportu-
nities to serve on one of our boards or committees are available
on a regular basis. If you are interested in serving on the Tree
Conservation Board, Code Enforcement Board, Community
Development Board, Pension Board, or Cultural Arts and
Recreation Advisory Committee, you can
get more information from the City Clerk,
Maureen King at 247-5809.
