Children’s Holiday Celebration The City of Atlantic Beach will join with Atlantic Beach Children for Peace at the Adele Grage Cultural Center on Friday, December 16th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm for an evening of fun to benefit the children of Donner Park. Admission will be one unwrapped gift for a child age 6 months to 13 years old. There will be plenty of activities for the kids including a holiday sing- along, snow machine, refreshments, live performances and a visit from Santa. Bring along a chair or blanket to enjoy a big screen movie showing of last year’s ABC 4Peace Benefit production. This is a great opportunity to let your child experience the true meaning of giving during this holiday season while enjoying a special evening of holiday events. If anyone in the community wishes to make a gift donation, they can drop off their donations at the Atlantic Beach Fire Department at 850 Seminole Road no later than Friday, December 16th. “Be an Angel” Gift Tree Be an angel and give a child a holiday surprise. The City of Atlantic Beach “Be an Angel” gift trees will be ready for “Angels” on December 1st. We have many children in our community in need of a gift this holiday season. Please consider visiting the Adele Grage Cultural Center to select a child from our tree and make this holiday “something special” for a child in our community. Please return wrapped gifts to the Adele Grage Cultural Center no later than December 15th. For more information contact the Recreation and Special Events Office at 247-5828. Visit Our Parks Now that the weather is cooling down, it’s a good time to explore your Atlantic Beach parks. Many people are unaware of the parks and programs that the City has to offer. Did you know that the City has two different parks on the Intracoastal Waterway? Dutton Island Preserve has a fishing pier, walking trails, a floating dock, camping facilities, public restrooms and a pavilion. The Tideviews Preserve also has walking trails, picnic areas and public restrooms, and just opened a new pier with excellent fishing, a kayak launch and amazing views of the marsh. Because of a recent purchase of 350 acres of marshland and islands between these two parks, the City is preparing a master plan to determine the best ways to provide public access and usage while protecting and preserving the area for the future. Russell Park has been the most popular City facility (except for the beach) and has recently had the ball field lights upgraded with energy efficient lighting. Lights have also been added to the Skate Park to extend usage into the evenings. Donner Park has had the baseball and flag football fields renovated and upgraded this year, and the park has added lighting on the basketball courts to extend the playing hours. It also has new tennis courts and public restrooms in addition to the Donner Community Center onsite. There are numerous events scheduled in our parks throughout the year ranging from organized sports like Little League baseball and flag football, to music events and festivals including MarshFest, Camping Under the Stars, Art Walk, and Arts in the Park. There is an annual skate park competition, and the “Wild Wonders” tours are an opportunity to learn about the wildlife at Dutton and Tideviews Preserves. Citizens are also able to reserve camp sites, pavilions, and other park facilities for their personal use. For park locations, facilities, directions and event schedules, check out our website at www.coab.us/events, visit us on Facebook or contact our Recreation and Special Events Office at recreation@ coab.us. Get off the couch and enjoy the island. You own it. — Mayor Borno Don’t Let Your Dog Park Membership Expire The City of Atlantic Beach wants to remind everyone that memberships purchased before July 1, 2011 will expire on Saturday, December 31st and must be renewed to maintain access to the dog park. If you purchased your membership after July 1st, 2011, it will remain valid until December 31, 2012. The annual membership fee is $50 for the first dog and $25 for each additional dog (sales tax will be added to all fees). Shot records must be completed and signed by a veterinarian and applicants must show proof that dogs have been spayed or neutered. Applications can be downloaded off the City’s website at www.coab.us/dogpark or picked up at City Hall, 800 Seminole Road, Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm. Yard Waste Reminder In order to keep our City looking clean, it takes everyone’s help. Please observe the following rules when placing your yard waste on the curb for collection: - All yard waste should be placed behind the curb or edge of pavement - Do not block storm water flow by staging yard debris in the gutter - Never blow grass clippings or leaves into the storm drains - Separate yard waste from household garbage for collection - Grass clippings and leaves must be in open/uncovered cans or in sealed plastic bags not weighing more than 40 pounds - Limbs must be in 5’ lengths or less and 6” or less in diameter. No item or stump may weigh more than 40 pounds. - Don’t use cardboard boxes for yard waste. Once emptied, they become windborne litter. - Yard waste must not be stacked over water or gas meters, under low hanging tree limbs or utility wires, or beside mailboxes. - Do not mix construction debris, lumber, fencing or building materials with yard debris. - Yard debris may not be placed on vacant lots, City street medians or parks. These are considered to be illegal dumps, are subject to a fine and delayed pick-up. - Collection of yard waste is limited to 5 cubic yards weekly. This is approximately the size of a standard pickup truck load. Any excess will be picked up on your next pickup day, or you may arrange for a special pickup at a per cubic yard rate approved by the City. Advanced Disposal Service’s Supervisor will make the determination of the amount of excess yard waste. Call Public Works at 247-5834 for additional information. Green waste produced by a Landscape Contractor, Tree Surgeon, or other tree removal operation must be disposed of by the Contractor and is not included within the requirements of the City’s Sanitation Contractor’s responsibility. Neighborhood and Homeowner Associations: If you are having a combined neighborhood cleanup and will have large piles of yard debris, please notify the Public Works Department in advance so that we can schedule a special pickup with Advanced Disposal. Please note that rules on bagging or otherwise containerizing leaves and loose debris still apply. How an Irrigation Audit Can Save You Money You may notice an obvious problem with your automatic irrigation system—for instance if your sprinklers dump more water on your driveway than your yard— but your other problems may not be so apparent. A trained irrigation auditor can perform a thorough check of your system, including revising the watering schedule, locating leaking components and suggesting replacement sprinkler heads. While the audit is not free, the savings generated may add up to more than cover the cost. Irrigation auditors qualified as an Environmental Protection Agency WaterSense Partner, and certified by the Irrigation Association provide a level of added professionalism. Check www.irrigation.org and click on “Certification,” then on “Find a Certified Professional”. Remember, only irrigate on your assigned days before 10:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m. Odd numbered addresses – Saturday Even numbered addresses – Sunday Non-Residential - Tuesday For more information on saving water, go to www.FloridasWater.com. Holiday Hours for City Offices City offices will be closed on Friday, December 23rd, Monday, December 26th and Monday, January 2nd.
