Johns river caused by too much nitrogen. new state and Federal regulations require atlantic Beach and other cities in the region to reduce the amount of nitrogen discharged into the river from wastewater plants and storm water systems. the deadline for atlantic Beach to meet the new requirements is October of 2013. the least expensive way to meet the requirements is to eliminate one of the City’s two wastewater plants, upgrade the other and meet the storm water requirements by taking more nitrogen out of the wastewater discharge. Plans have been prepared for the work, permits have been received from regulatory agencies, and bids have been opened. now for the good news; bids for all of these projects came in well under budget largely due to the depressed economy: the contractors need work. the bids are low enough to allow some additional work on sludge handling facilities that will reduce future operating costs and to make some improvements that will allow the City to better control odors. Work on these projects will begin soon and will be finished in 2012. this will allow the plant operators plenty of time to get the new equipment operating properly to meet the state deadline. Much of the piping work will be done by directional boring, rather than the more usual method of trenching, to minimize the impact to trees and adjacent residents. even though these improvements are being made in atlantic Beach and other wastewater plants in the region, citizens still need to do their part to keep the st. Johns river clean in the future. Please keep the following suggestions in mind. • Fertilize only when necessary. Don’t fertilize before a heavy rain and never fertilize within ten feet of a stream or lake. • Don’t let grass clippings wash into a storm drain or stream. • Pick-up pet waste regularly. • never dump oil, chemicals or other waste into a storm drain. • if you have a septic tank, make sure it is properly maintained. it takes each and every one of us working together to make improvements to our environment for the future. — Mayor Borno Water exhibits at MOsh Jacksonville’s Museum of science and History has some great permanent exhibits to help you and your kids learn about water. explore Florida underwater habitats at the Water Worlds multiple aquariums. at the atlantic tails exhibit, meet Fermata, a life size right whale and her baby, along with other marine mammals.
