A lot of things make Atlantic Beach the kind of place that people want to come home to. Some are the unique events that you can’t find anywhere else and the wide range of recreational opportunities available. Special events range from the holiday tree lighting in December to the annual campout in Russell Park in the Fall, the Acoustic and Songwriters Nights in Bull Park from the Spring through Fall, a variety of festivals and art shows throughout the year, Twilight Movies in various locations and “Wild Wonders” nature programs in the Dutton and Tideviews Preserves. There are recreational opportunities to suit just about everybody’s taste from Little League baseball to flag football, tennis (at three locations in the City), a skate park (now open in the evening with new lighting), fishing at Dutton and Tideviews Preserves and a host of plays to see at the Adele Grage Center. If you haven’t checked out the calendar of events on the City’s webpage at www.coab.us, you might be surprised at the number and variety of things to do. You can even sign up to be notified when new events are posted. Many of these events are put on by volunteers. The City’s Cultural Arts and Recreation Advisory Committee uses energetic volunteers for hands-on event planning and production. You can volunteer by filling out an application available on the website or you can call or stop by the City Clerk’s Office in City Hall. Atlantic Beach has something for just about everybody that makes us long to come home, be it from a hard day’s work, returning from an overseas deployment or even moving back after living elsewhere. Atlantic Beach is about as good as it gets. — Mayor Borno Winter Water Conservation Tips Our north Florida winter is finally here. Take action to protect your pipes and keep your water use down during the chilly season! • Insulate hot water pipes to reduce the time it takes to get hot water to the faucet. • Insulate pipes in unheated areas, as well as outdoor spigots and backflow preventers. • Locate and test your master water shut-off valve. If a pipe breaks in your house, you want to be able to shut the water off quickly. • Seal openings into the house where cold air could reach unprotected pipes. • If temperatures are predicted to reach near 20 degrees F, prevent pipes from freezing by leaving faucets open at the slowest drip possible. It’s not the flowing water, but the release of pressure, that protects pipes from bursting. • Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow heat to circulate around pipes. • Drain your pipes before going out of town for an extended period. Close the master shut-off valve, and run every fixture until no water comes out. For more conservation tips, visit www.FloridasWater.com. remember your Day: Only irrigate on your day, before 10 am and after 4 pm.
