The City of Jacksonville will have a mobile household hazardous waste vehicle at the Atlantic
Beach City Hall parking lot (next to Russell Park), 800 Seminole Road on Saturday, March 18
from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Many materials used in the homes and gardens are considered hazardous waste and must NOT
be thrown into household trash. These materials can cause serious safety and health problems.
Check the list below for types of products to take to the household hazardous waste and e-waste
collection on March 18th.
On behalf of the
Staff and the
Commission, let
me wish all of you
a happy and a
prosperous new
year. What a new
year this is going to be! At the end of
2005, the Commission ‘bit the bullet’
and made a number of tough deci-
sions and developed new directions
for the City. In order to help preserve
the charm and neighborliness of many
of the City’s older neighborhoods, the
Commission directed Staff to develop
a contract to bring Noré Winter back
to complete the process begun last
year to preserve the ambience of the
Core City—i.e. a model ordinance
with such changes to the Code as
will safeguard the old Core City while
allowing new development and
redevelopment.
In an effort to stave off further lot
subdivisions in fully platted and built-out
neighborhoods, the Commission has
put a moratorium in place until such
time as ordinances can be passed to
preserve those tree-canopied and
larger landscaped lots.
The Commission will also prepare a
referendum for the citizens to amend
the City Charter with language limiting
the height of all future buildings whether
in the commercial or residential districts
to 35 feet or less.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE AND E-WASTE COLLECTION
One way to save water and lower your monthly bill is to check for leaks and repair them as
soon as possible. Also, make sure everyone in the house turns the water off completely
when they’re finished using it. Here are the gallons per month that can be wasted from a
leak or a dripping or running faucet:

A Fix-It feature has been added to the City’s
website at www.coab.us!
One click on the Fix-It button provides the
user with a list of common suggestions and/or
problems, including potholes, traffic controls,
weeds, road repairs, abandoned vehicles,
animal problems, and other items that require
the City’s attention. The user is able to
provide a name and contact information,
and then click on the associated problem to
be addressed. There are also blocks so that the
user can type in additional information relative
to the suggestion/problem and provide details
on the location. Once the user submits the
form online, it is routed to the appropriate
department to address and resolve.
Avoid playing “telephone tag” with city staff
members, and just use the Fix-It button on
the front page of the City website!

In order to get a handle on storm
water runoff, the Commission voted to
move swimming pools from the
“permeable” category to the “imper-
meable” category. The Commission
is looking at two infrastructure projects:
the first, to ameliorate flooding in and
around Aquatic Gardens—i.e. the
Hopkins Creek drainage project, and
the second, the rehabilitation and/or
replacement of infrastructure in Royal
Palms.
Quality of life is being further
addressed through our “adopt a tree”
program, our new pedestrian paths,
and the new medians designed for
Mayport Road. As we begin setting up
for strategic planning, we welcome
your comments and ideas for the
beautification of A.B. and the
enhancement of the City.

for 2006 CDBG projects.Funds will
be available after the first of the year,
and grant funds will be used primarily
for septic tank to City sewer conver-
sions. Grant recipients must meet
low and moderate-income guidelines
and other eligibility requirements as
established by the City and the federal
government. Applications and addi-
tional informationcan be obtained
from the Building and Zoning counter
at City Hall or by calling 247-5826.
You know where you live, you know where you work, but do the fire, rescue, and police
departments? Precious minutes are lost everyday because someone didn’t ensure that a
home or business was properly numbered—precious minutes that could save a life, a home
or a business. As a resident or business owner in the City of Atlantic Beach, you are required
to have your building number permanently attached to the outside of your home or business,
in a conspicuous place and clearly visible from the street it faces. So think of prevention,
think of the costs, think of the loss and ensure we can find your number.
