2010 Late Night
Skates Are Coming
Mark your calendars! The City of Atlantic Beach has
scheduled FIVE late night skates for 2010. The
events will take place on Friday evenings from
5 to 9 pm. The scheduled dates are January
8th and 22nd, February 5th and 19th and
March 5th (weather permitting). Skaters
under 17 must have a wavier on file at
City Hall and have a city-issued decal
on their helmet. For more info, call the
Recreation & Special Events Office at
247-5828.
Dear Citizens,
It was wonderful to see the enthusiastic
crowd at the Town Center Christmas Tree lighting on December
5th. Thanks to the Town Center Agency and Lindley Tolbert
for chairing the committee that provided the new Christmas
decorations to the Town Center area. The crowd (especially
the children) enjoyed all the wonderful events throughout the
day. A special thanks to the Atlantic Beach staff who worked
so hard to make this an event to remember.
As we start the New Year, the Commission and staff are in the
process of gearing up for the Strategic Planning sessions which
we hope to start in early February. These planning sessions will
establish the priorities for the coming year of where we put the
concentration of our available staff man-hours and will guide
preparation of the budget (funds from all areas are predicted to
be even tighter than last year). The Commission and staff will
be working to ensure that the City’s infrastructure, safety and
quality of life needs are met to the best of our funding ability.
On behalf of the Commission and staff of Atlantic Beach, I wish
you a very Happy New Year.
—Mike Borno
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle & Rethink
Disposal of Compact
Flourescent Light Bulbs
The Jacksonville Electric Authority, the City of Jacksonville and participating Green Partners retailers
(Proctor Ace Hardware, 580 Atlantic Blvd., Neptune Beach is the nearest for Atlantic Beach residents)
have partnered to create a convenient system for disposing of spent compact fluorescent light bulbs
(CFLs). The Jacksonville Electric Authority provides transportation to the City of Jacksonville (COJ)
Household Hazardous Waste Collection site. The City of Jacksonville will then send them to a recycling
facility for mercury recovery.
Only CFLs from Duval County residents will be collected. Broken CFLs and any other types of fluorescent
lighting (such as tubes) will not be collected at these remote sites. They must be taken to the COJ
Household Hazardous Waste Collection site on Commonwealth Avenue or held for the next Hazardous
Waste Mobile Collection event held here at the beach. For more information, go to http://www.jea.
com/community/conservcenter/home/cfl-disposal.asp.
To increase recycling throughout Florida, the Governor has established a statewide recycling goal of 75
percent to be achieved by 2020. In 2006, Florida recycled about 24 percent of the municipal solid
waste collected. This year, Atlantic Beach residents have recycled an average of 27 percent of solid waste
(household garbage and yard waste). Atlantic Beach’s Sanitation Contractor, Advanced Disposal, will recycle
all of the following:
• Plastic food, beverage, detergent bottles and jugs with narrow necks and screw-on tops labeled with
a 1 through 7. (Please place tops/lids in garbage)
• Glass bottles and jars (green, amber and clear; please place tops/lids in garbage)
• Metal and aluminum cans
• Newspapers and inserts (on rainy days, please hold until next collection day)
• Magazines, catalogs and telephone books
• Brown paper bags (can also be used to hold excess recyclables)
• Corrugated cardboard (flattened and cut in pieces 2’ by 3’ or smaller)
• Boxboard (cereal or food boxes, remove plastic or wax paper liners)
• No plastic bags, waxed (square) milk cartons or juice boxes
• No motor oil, pool chemicals, pesticide or fertilizer bottles
By improving recycling habits, Florida’s residents and businesses can protect the environment, preserve
natural resources and contribute to the economic well-being and security of our nation.
Tree Adoption Program 2010
The City has begun planning for the Adopt-A-Tree 2010 program. The
intent of this program is to augment and maintain the City’s tree canopy
by planting trees in the City right-of-way at residential locations. (In some
special cases such as utility conflicts, trees may be planted on private
property close to the right of way). In exchange for resident’s agreement
to adopt a tree, which requires watering and maintaining it, the City
will purchase and plant the trees at a mutually agreed upon location.
Anticipated tree options include Live Oaks, Drake Elms, and East Palatka
Hollies. Trees are scheduled to be installed in mid to late January. The
City will host a seminar on tree planting and care on Florida Arbor Day,
January 15, 2010. Tree adoption forms are available at City Hall, Public
Works, or may be downloaded from the City’s website (www.coab.us).
Winterizing Tips
to Save Water
We may not have a “real” winter here in
Atlantic Beach, but temperatures do drop
below freezing once in a while. Here are some
tips to help you save water during the winter
season. Wind chill is especially important to
consider when protecting pipes from freezing
and breaking.
• Locate your house shut-off valve and make
sure it works. That way if a pipe does
burst, you can avoid property damage and
lost water.
• If you plan to leave your home unoccupied
while you travel, close your house shut-off
valve.
• Insulate water pipes in unheated areas of
your home, outdoor spigots and backflow
preventers. Be sure to keep the wrapping dry.
• Disconnect and drain garden hoses when
freezing weather is forecast.
• Never try to thaw frozen pipes with an
open flame!
remember:
never irrigate between 10 am and 4 pm.
Know your Day.
irrigation is only allowed one day per week:
saturday = odd numbered addresses
sunday = even numbered addresses
tuesday = nonresidential properties
