May 2010.pdfCode Enforcement Corner
With summer comes the afternoon showers that help grass
grow quickly. Please be respectful of your neighbors
and mow your front, side and back yards at
least once every ten days. You’ll stay
ahead of the “jungle” that can quickly
become your yard, earn the everlasting
appreciation of your neighbors and
stay in compliance with the City
Code. If you see a yard that needs
some attention, contact the City’s
Code Enforcement Officer, Eddie
Lopez at 247-5855 or e-mail
elopez@coab.us.

Emergency Notification system
and Phone Registration
The City of Atlantic Beach will use an emergency telephone
notification system called firstCall Interactive Network to
notify citizens of emergencies (missing children, active police
emergencies, etc.), potential hazards (hurricane evacuations),
or vital public interest notifications (crime alerts, boil-water
alerts, etc).
Primary telephone numbers of residents and businesses in
Atlantic Beach are included in the firstCall database. Additional
telephone numbers such as cell, work, and unlisted numbers can
be registered directly by citizens through the firstCall website
www.firstcall.net. You can also register your number by calling
(866) 484-3264. Phone numbers are not subject to public
disclosure.
The City has actively sought outside funding
sources to pay for various projects, equipment,
and staffing necessary to maintain and
improve City services. This has been particularly significant
during the present economic conditions where revenue sources
have been greatly reduced. Grants and low interest loans are
being utilized for a variety of initiatives throughout the City.
A total of $1,465,462 in funding has been acquired since
2008 for various projects. These grants provide funding for four
(4) fulltime police positions, police vehicles, computers, tasers,
video cameras and vests, $470,000 for sewer rehabilitation
projects, over $330,000 for sidewalks, parks, facilities and
lighting for athletic fields and over $100,000 for energy
projects.
The Public Utilities Department has obtained commitments for
a $1,000,000 grant for upgrading the waste water plant to
meet new nitrogen limits and a $708,000 low interest loan for
a new well and water main.
several other grant applications have been submitted over the
past few months totaling more than $300,000 and additional
applications are being prepared.
The City Commission has authorized a substantial amount of top
staff time to be devoted to obtaining grants. We hope you will
agree that it is time well spent.
— Mayor Borno
Create a Florida Friendly Yard
One of the best ways to protect the environment is to start in your own back yard. The
florida Yards website is a great way to get started.
The site has a fun tutorial on florida-friendly landscaping, a beautiful photo gallery of actual
florida-friendly yards, and an interactive yard tool to design your own water-conserving
landscape. An extensive plant database is also available to help you select the best plants,
trees, shrubs, grasses and ground cover for your yard.
A “Professional’s Corner” contains downloadable guidelines and best management
practices. If you have a specific question, you can also ask an expert online.
remember your Days – irrigate only before 10 am or after 4 pm on your assigned days:
odd addresses wednesday and saturday
even addresses thursday and sunday
Non-residential tuesday and friday
Help Protect Our sea Turtles
The City of Atlantic Beach would like to
remind everyone that turtle nesting season
takes place from May 1st through October
31st. Please help protect their safety by
keeping our beaches as dark as possible during the nesting
season. for more information on sea turtle nests you can
contact the Beaches sea Turtle Patrol at (904) 613-6081 or
visit their website at www.bstp.net.
Yard Waste Requirements
Reminder that yard waste such as leaves or grass
clippings should be bagged or placed in a yard waste
receptacle (not to exceed 40 lbs) and should be set
out for pickup no earlier than two days prior to your
collection day. Bulk Items such as palm fronds or tree
limbs no longer than 5 feet in length and 6 inches
in diameter may be set out when generated. Each
residence is allowed a cumulative amount of five (5)
cubic yards weekly. Green waste produced by a
landscape contractor, tree trimming or removal
service must be disposed of by the contractor.
Hurricane Planning and Re-Entry
If the City of Atlantic Beach sustains significant damage from a hurricane, then access back to the beach may be restricted to local citizens, governmental officials, and
local businesses. To help identify these people, the beach cities have Hurricane Re-Entry Passes that can be displayed in a vehicle for easy identification after a storm.
re-entry passes that have been distributed to atlantic Beach residents during the past several years will remain valid and do not need to be
replaced. However, if someone is new to the City of Atlantic Beach or they have misplaced the Hurricane Re-entry pass, passes are
available from City Hall and/or the Atlantic Beach Public safety Building Monday through friday, from 8am to 5pm.
To obtain a pass, an individual may show a driver’s license, utility bill, tax receipt or similar documentation
to confirm residency.
