one of the things that make any community
great are the people who dedicate their time
and energy as volunteers. the citizens of atlantic beach have
been blessed with a strong sense of community pride and
responsibility and many offer their services.
atlantic beach has several volunteer boards. the Code
enforcement board is there to hear and decide upon violations
to the City Code. there is a Community Development board
that makes recommendations to the Commission on planning,
land use and zoning and approves variances as authorized in
the Code. We have a Cultural arts and recreation advisory
Committee established to propose, plan, promote and review
artistic, recreational cultural programs, exhibits and projects.
Many of the great events that occur in atlantic beach throughout
the year are a result of their hard work. the City has two different
Pension boards, one for Police and one for General employees,
that are responsible for the administration, management and
operation of the retirement systems. We also have a board
Member review Committee whose job it is to interview and
recommend appointments to the various boards and committees
for the Mayor and Commission to consider. Volunteers on City
boards and committees are honored annually at a cookout which
will be held in September this year.
there are also numerous organizations that are not affiliated
with the city government but provide valuable services to the
community. these include neighborhood associations, civic clubs,
scout troops and others.
being the type of community that people want to live in, requires
a lot of commitment and dedication from the people that live
there. all of those who have contributed their time and efforts in
the past deserve our deepest appreciation. to those who have
not yet chosen to contribute, you may want to consider it. Many
people find that they get back much more than they give when
they volunteer for a worthwhile cause.
— Mayor borno

tree trimming
NotiCe: if a tree trimming Contractor, lawn service provider or other
professional is hired by a resident to remove trees or limbs, including palm
fronds, that Contractor is responsible for removal and proper disposal of the
resulting debris. private contractors are not allowed to place the debris at the curb
to be removed by the City or the City’s sanitation Contractor.
Many residents have hired contractors who are unlicensed and unqualified to trim their
palm trees. Please ensure the contractor you hire to remove or trim trees is licensed
to do the removal, and most importantly, has insurance coverage – they must have
liability insurance (in case their actions cause additional damage to your home) and
workmen’s Compensation insurance (otherwise you may be liable if one of their
workers is injured while working on your property).
Drastic over trimming may compromise the palm’s health. if you trim your palms to
prepare for severe weather, you should know that experts at University of florida’s
institute of food and agricultural Sciences (ifaS) say that sabal palms are one of the
most survivable trees (along with live oaks) available. if you are trimming for esthetic
reasons, they recommend not trimming above horizontal (9:00 to 3:00). often tree
“pruners” take off an excessive number of green fronds. these are the leaves that
produce food for the palm. if you limit the amount of food, you limit the growth of
the palm. in certain species of palms naturally yellowing fronds are a source of plant
nutrients and their removal will hinder growth unless supplemental fertilizer is added.

Help Stop illegal Dumping
Did you know that illegal dumping is punishable by up to a $10,000 fine and
five (5) years in prison? besides being an eyesore, it can also become a health
problem by promoting disease carrying rodents that are harmful to people
and pets.
you can do your part to stop illegal dumping by immediately reporting
any activity you see. in atlantic beach, contact the Police Department at
247-5859. once a report has been filed, contact the Public Works Department at
247-5834 and provide the case number.
two frequent examples of illegal dumping are the improper disposal of construction
and demolition debris (C&D) and the improper disposal of tree trimming waste
including palm fronds. to assist customers in the proper disposal of construction
and demolition debris (C&D), the City has a list of permitted roll-off haulers. these
haulers are required to dispose of C&D in a permitted landfill or recycling facility.
roll-off haulers doing business in atlantic beach that are not on the list are in
violation of City Code. to ensure construction materials are disposed of legally and
in an environmentally-sound manner, please help us by contracting with permitted
haulers only. Please contact the atlantic beach building Department or Public
Works for a list of approved roll-off haulers.
