Check Out Our New Events
the City of Atlantic Beach is offering two new family entertainment
programs for the summer months. the City is partnering with sunrise
Community Church to bring family-oriented movies to our community.
Join us at Veterans Park on saturday, July 11th for the first twilight
Movie in the Parks. the movie will be the disney movie “the Game
Plan” a sports comedy starring dwayne “the Rock” Johnson. Come
early and enjoy free refreshments at 7:30 pm. Movie begins at dusk.
future movies will be shown on August 22 and september 26. the
movie location will rotate throughout our city parks.
Another new event this year is the tunes ‘n’ talent. this event features
a host dJ who spins music for your listening, dancing and singing
pleasure. the “mic” is open to anyone and local talent is encouraged
to take the stage. this event will be held at Jordan Park on saturdays,
July 11th, August 1st and september 12th from 6 - 8 pm.
All events are free and open to the public. Bring your blankets, lawn
chairs and snacks and come out for a delightful evening of family fun.
Adults are asked to accompany children.
Our thanks go to the
members of the Atlantic Beach
Public Arts Commission for their
six year quest to create the new
sculpture “in search of Atlantis”, located at the five-way
intersection on seminole Road. Many compliments have been
received and i would urge those who do not pass through the area
regularly to visit and enjoy. With the naming (River Branch Preserve)
of our latest acquisition of over 350 acres of pristine marshland on
the intracoastal waterway, Atlantic Beach has perhaps the largest
land area dedicated to preservation, as a percentage of our size, of
any florida city. Our thanks again to the River Branch foundation.
At a recent Commission meeting, we were presented with some
statistics of state and federal Grants that have either been awarded
to Atlantic Beach or are in process. 2008-09 Grants include $36,000
for dUi enforcement, $43,000 for Crime suppression, $120,000
for a tennis court, sidewalks and improvements to donner Park
and $48,000 for mobile emergency command capabilities. 2009-
10 projects and applications include $263,000 for Mayport Road
Redevelopment, $300,000 for sewer and manhole rehabilitation,
$120,000 for a dock and boat launch in tide Views Preserve,
$33,000 for the Community Policing program on Mayport Road and
millions of dollars of applications for wastewater treatment and water
projects. finding and processing grants occupies a significant portion
of staff time and continues a tradition of finding funding to help the
community. in the past, grants have been utilized to hire police
officers, initiate and fund community centers, purchase computers
and software, acquire communications equipment, train and equip
personnel, purchase and develop parkland and infrastructure and
fund storm water, water and waste water projects. Grants have been
an invaluable tool in enhancing the quality of life in our community.

top 10 “Code tips” for 2009
iMPortANt City Code reMiNders
to keeP you NeighBorly All yeAr loNg
1. inoperable Vehicles: A junked or abandoned vehicle
should not be parked or stored on any residential
property. All motorized vehicles must be operational
and registered.
2. yard sale/open house signs: Only two signs are
permitted for the event and the signs must be placed
wholly on the property where it is being held. signs
may not be posted on utility/light poles or in public
right-of-ways.
3. yard sales: Atlantic Beach residents are only allowed
to hold yard sales three days a year.
4. outside storage: Household items, furniture and
those items customarily intended for indoor use should
not be displayed, maintained or stored outdoors or in
any location on the lot where such items are visible
from adjacent properties.
5. trash receptacles: Garbage and yard waste containers
should be set out no earlier than 6 pm the day prior
to collection and should be returned to their place of
storage on the day of collection.
6. lawns: should not exceed twelve (12) inches in
height.
7. recreational Vehicles/trailers: All recreational
vehicles/trailers must be parked at least 15 feet
behind the front property line.
8. fences: Property owners are required to maintain
fences on their property. fences that have become
dilapidated should be repaired, replaced or removed
from the property.
9. fire hydrants: the blocking or hiding of fire hydrants
makes them difficult for the fire department to find
and is prohibited. All hydrants must have a clear space
of at least 3 feet maintained around the circumference
of the hydrant and be clearly visible from the street.
10. Animal feces: When walking pets, owners should be
responsible and pick up and properly dispose of waste.
enjoy the pool or spa on the holiday weekend, but remember ways to conserve water too:
• Check your swimming pool for leaks and have them fixed promptly.
How do you know if your pool is leaking?
– losing more than 1-inch of water from your pool weekly
– if you are you having trouble balancing your chemicals because you have to keep adding water
– Constantly damp soil around the pool
– loose or falling tiles
– Obvious cracks, gaps or settling
• Use a pool or spa cover to reduce evaporation, and save up to 7,000 gallons of water per year.
(increases safety factor and helps keep debris out of the pool too!)
• Use the newer cartridge filters. Backwashing sand and diatomaceous filters use about 500 gallons
for each cycle.
remember – new irrigation rules are in effect. water only on your assigned two days per week, before
10 am or after 4 pm. homes with odd addresses – wednesday and saturday
homes with eVeN addresses – thursday and sunday
Non-residential – tuesday and friday
for more information on how to conserve water, check out the st. Johns River Water Management’s website

Association of town Watch and the Atlantic Beach Police department, has been scheduled for tuesday,
August 4, 2009.
NAtiONAl NiGHt OUt is designed to: (1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate
support for and participation in local anticrime programs; (3) strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-
community partnerships; and (4) send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are
organized and fighting back.
We ask that all residents leave their porch lights on from 6 pm – 10 pm on August 4th to show your
dedication and support of crime free neighborhoods.
if your neighborhood does not already have an active Neighborhood Watch program, this would be a great
time to come together with your neighbors and make the commitment. you can contact sgt. Gus Carlson
