Our thanks go to the members of the Atlantic Beach Public Arts Commission for their six year quest to create the new sculpture “in search of Atlantis”, located at the five-way intersection on seminole Road. Many compliments have been received and i would urge those who do not pass through the area regularly to visit and enjoy. With the naming (River Branch Preserve) of our latest acquisition of over 350 acres of pristine marshland on the intracoastal waterway, Atlantic Beach has perhaps the largest land area dedicated to preservation, as a percentage of our size, of any florida city. Our thanks again to the River Branch foundation. At a recent Commission meeting, we were presented with some statistics of state and federal Grants that have either been awarded to Atlantic Beach or are in process. 2008-09 Grants include $36,000 for dUi enforcement, $43,000 for Crime suppression, $120,000 for a tennis court, sidewalks and improvements to donner Park and $48,000 for mobile emergency command capabilities. 2009- 10 projects and applications include $263,000 for Mayport Road Redevelopment, $300,000 for sewer and manhole rehabilitation, $120,000 for a dock and boat launch in tide Views Preserve, $33,000 for the Community Policing program on Mayport Road and millions of dollars of applications for wastewater treatment and water projects. finding and processing grants occupies a significant portion of staff time and continues a tradition of finding funding to help the community. in the past, grants have been utilized to hire police officers, initiate and fund community centers, purchase computers and software, acquire communications equipment, train and equip personnel, purchase and develop parkland and infrastructure and fund storm water, water and waste water projects. Grants have been an invaluable tool in enhancing the quality of life in our community. —Mayor Meserve Save Water Celebrating Independence Day top 10 “Code tips” for 2009 iMPortANt City Code reMiNders to keeP you NeighBorly All yeAr loNg 1. inoperable Vehicles: A junked or abandoned vehicle should not be parked or stored on any residential property. How do you know if your pool is leaking? – losing more than 1-inch of water from your pool weekly – if you are you having trouble balancing your chemicals because you have to keep adding water – Constantly damp soil around the pool – loose or falling tiles – Obvious cracks, gaps or settling • Use a pool or spa cover to reduce evaporation, and save up to 7,000 gallons of water per year.
