We are planning on an April 30th property closing to purchase the “Buckman Property” which will add more than 300 acres of Old Florida marshes, islands and water trails to our City’s passive park system. While the majority of the purchase price is coming from other sources, including a significant gift from an anonymous donor (thank you so much), this purchase protects a large area from future development in very sensitive tidal areas. It is part of a longtime commitment by many Atlantic Beach Commissions to protect our environment and provide access to a pristine environment...The financial crisis is having major effects on both State and local budgets. The 2nd round of budget reductions (in 2009) to be considered by the Commission is to offset reductions in sales tax which will cost Atlantic Beach another $100,000 this coming year. The last budget amendment reduced revenues by $370,000 for interest earnings, sales taxes and other revenues received through the State. These have been mostly offset by cutting back on discretionary projects (drainage projects, parks maintenance, new and repaired sidewalks, etc.) and other projects and purchases coming in under budget (partially due to a slow economy and contractors hungry for work). Atlantic Beach has so far been able to keep the budget balanced without drastic service level reductions evident across Florida and the nation, but we may need to consider other alternatives in the next budget year...Meanwhile we are actively pursuing grants. Atlantic Beach has been spending considerable administrative time in finding available grant programs and preparing applications. This is not only for federal stimulus funding, but for several other types of grants. It is a time of challenges for government, businesses and in our personal lives, but we will persevere. —Mayor Meserve Hurricane Preparedness Week What To Do With Your Water If You Have To Evacuate For A Hurricane In the midst of getting ready to evacuate if a hurricane heads our way, there’s one more thing to remember — turn the water off to your home at your main house cut-off valve. In severe storms, if trees fall on top of homes or roofs are partially torn, plumbing can break and make damages even worse. So be sure to include this step in your checklist. And let’s hope for an easy hurricane season. remember: New irrigation rules are in effect. water only on your assigned two days per week, before 10 am or after 4 pm. homes with oDD addresses – wednesday and saturday homes with eVeN addresses – thursday and sunday Non-residential – tuesday and friday For more information on how you can save water go to www.floridaswater.com History teaches that a lack of hurricane awareness and preparation are common threads among all major hurricane disasters. By knowing your vulnerability and what actions you should take, you can reduce the effects of a hurricane disaster. hurricane Preparedness week for 2009 will be held may 24th through may 30th. The goal of the Hurricane Preparedness website is to inform the public about the hurricane hazards and provide knowledge which can be used to take aCtioN. This information can be used to save lives at work, home, while on the road or on the water. Visit the National hurricane Center website for more information: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/HAW2/english/intro.shtml For local information, go to www.coab.us or www.coj.net… just use the search functions and enter “hurricane.” Hurricane hazards come in many forms: storm surge, high winds, tornadoes and flooding. This means it is important for your family to have a plan that includes all of these hazards. (http://www.nhc.noaa. gov/HAW2/english/prepare/family_plan.shtml) Look carefully at the safety actions associated with each type of hurricane hazard and prepare your family disaster plan accordingly. But remember this is only a guide. The first and most important thing anyone should do when facing a hurricane threat is to use common sense. you should be able to answer the following questions before a hurricane threatens: • What are the Hurricane Hazards? • What does it mean to you? • What actions should you take to be prepared? Do you have a hurricane re-entry Pass? hurricane re-entry passes have been distributed to atlantic Beach residents during the past several years, and those passes continue to be valid. however, if someone is new to the City of atlantic Beach or they have misplaced the hurricane re-entry pass, then additional passes are available from City hall and/or the atlantic Beach Police Department monday through friday, from 8 am to 5 pm. residents picking up re-entry passes will be asked to provide documentation to confirm residency. Disaster Prevention should include: • Developing a family Plan • Creatiing a Disaster supply Kit • having a Place to Go • securing your home • having a Pet Plan
