PROTECTING OUR (IN)VALUABLE SAND DUNES
The beach and dune system is our community’s first line of defense
against storms because they buffer coastal development from storm
waves. This fact was certainly substantiated by Hurricane Matthew’s
wrath, which easily could have been much more devastating.
That’s where the importance of sea oats – those gorgeous, tall plants
with large golden-brown seed heads -- come into play.
Sea oats are extremely valuable for coastline and barrier island
protection because their massive root systems hold soil and sand in
place during hurricanes and tropical storms. Without the sea oats'
roots’ stabilizing influence, dune sand tends to blow away in the wind.
Further, the sand dunes are a habitat for lots of species, including sea
turtles.
In Atlantic Beach, when people are disturbing sea oats, we hope
they will call the Police Department at 247-5859. Our department
will respond accordingly. Photo and/or video documentation is very
helpful. The crime is a state law punishable by a fine of up to $500.
In Atlantic Beach, the city advocates a land ethic that recognizes
that landholding and use of land is a form of stewardship for the
community, the environment, and to future generations. Whether or
not the ropes or other do-not-cross markings are there, it’s crucial
to environmental health that people stay off the dunes. As such, we
strongly request that our residents and visitors use dune walkovers and
designated beach access points to cross the dunes.
We hope that our residents will continually be messengers by telling
others about the importance of protecting sand dunes and the
environment. In other words, you don’t have to be an environmental
expert to help protect sand dunes and the coastal environmental, you
just have to care.
ABOUT MOSQUITO CONTROL SPRAYING
Mosquito control services are provided to the City of Atlantic Beach
by the City of Jacksonville. Information on mosquito control spraying,
including the ground fogging and aerial schedules, is available online at www.
coj.net/mosquito.
The City of Jacksonville website provides updated information on recent and
future aerial sprayings in Atlantic Beach. Meanwhile, residents may submit
an online request to inspect or spray their property or neighborhood by calling
(904) 630-2489 or submitting an online form at 630city.coj.net. Please keep
in mind that weather is a huge factor in their planning and execution.
Please let me know if you have questions or concerns on these or any other
topics.

ILLICIT DISCHARGES
The City of Atlantic Beach has a Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System permit
under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, which governs
stormwater discharge into the City’s drainage system which ultimately leads into
the Intracoastal Waterway. One aspect of the city’s permit is a requirement to
control unauthorized discharges into the environment through illicit discharge
prevention. An illicit discharge is any non-stormwater input to the drainage
system, whether by an unauthorized connection (such as a swimming pool
discharge) or the dumping of any substance (even if mostly water) directly into
a drainage catch basin or ditch. Suspected illicit discharges or potential illicit
connections should be reported to Public Works at 247-5834.
