06-20-83 v MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL CALLED MEETING OF THE ATLANTIC BEACH CITY COMMISSION HELD AT THE CITY HALL ON JUNE 20, 1983 AT 6:00 P.M. PRESENT: Robert B. Persons, Jr. , Mayor-Commissioner Robert B. Cook, Sr. William I. Gulliford, Jr. John W. Morris, Jr. , Commissioners AND: Alan C. Jensen, City Attorney Adelaide R. Tucker. City Clerk ABSENT: Catherine G. Van Ness, Commissioner A. William Moss, City Manager - Attending another meeting The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Mayor Persons for the purpose of interviewing candidates for the position of City Attorney for the City of Atlantic Beach. The three candidates interviewed were Paul M. Harden, partner in the law firm of Smith, Davenport, Bloom & Harden; Robert Stuart Willis, partner in the law firm of Edwards, and Claude L. Mullis, of Counsel to Livermore Klein & Lott,P.A. and Mahoney Hadlow & Adams, P.A. The Commission conducted a thorough interview with each of the three candidates, including where they went to law school, municipal law and litigation experience, the reasons why each candidate had applied for the position, their availability if needed by the city at any time, and their hourly fee expected for litigation and matters that require inordinate amounts of time above the normal retainer of $500.00 per month. After the interviews, the motion was made by Commissioner Morris to discuss the qualifications of the candidates, seconded by Mayor Persons, and carried three to one. Commissioner Gulliford voted no. Following discussion on the qualifications, Commissioner Gulliford moved to hire Claude L. Mullis as the City Attorney for the City of Atlantic Beach, Florida. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Cook. Discussion followed before the vote. The question was called and the vote was taken by roll call. Commissioners Cook, Gulliford, and Morris voted aye and Mayor Persons voted nay. Motion carried. There being no further business to come before the commission, Commissioner Cook moved to adjourn, seconded by Commissioner Gulliford, and carried unanimously.
