Re: Existing Building Code -Substantial Structural Alteration

To whom it may concern,
The purpose of this letter is to address the building departments request for a
clarification regarding section 907.4.2 "Substantial Structural Alteration" in the Florida
Existing Code.
According to section 907.4.2, if more that 30%of the floor or roof of the structure is
altered, the alteration is considered substantial and shall be brought up to the current
building code.
If the alteration is less than 30%, the lateral resisting system shall be per section 907.4.3 &
807.5.Section 807.5 only requires the lateral resisting system whose alteration increases
the demand ratio greater than 10% be brought up to today's code.
As shown on page 2, the square footage of the building is 1300sf.The area of structural
alterations is 336sf which =25%. Since the structural alteration is less than 30%, and the
lateral resisting system is not being altered, the building lateral resisting elements do not
need to be brought up to today's building code.
In addition, the structural elements carrying gravity loads meet section 907.4 &807.4.
