10-25-05 v s MINUTES OF THE CULTURAL ARTS AND RECREATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE October 25,2005 A regular meeting of the Cultural Arts and Advisory Committee was held Tuesday,October 25,2005,in the Adele Grage Cultural Center. Present were Chair Rusty Pritchett,Ray Coleman,Linda Ginsberg, Alicia Paley,Laurie Melancon,Darrell Prather,Kathy Love,Margie Reeves,guest Casey Quinif,and Parks and Recreation Director Timmy Johnson.Ingrid McCawley was absent. 1. Call to Order Chair Rusty Prichett called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. 2. Approval of the Minutes of September 27,2005 A motion was made by Committee Member Ray Coleman,seconded by Committee Member Linda Ginsberg to approve the minutes of September 27,2005.The motion carried unanimously. 3. Old Business a) Events/Programs i) Songwriter's Concert ii) Acoustic Night The event was held inside the Theater due to the rain.There were about 50 people in attendance. The next event is scheduled for March 5. iii) Art Festival Linda presented the"Press Release"and"Call to the Artist's" information. She asked Committee members for assistance in the marketing of this event.There was a sign up sheet passed out for Committee members to dedicate time to attend and assist at the festival this year.Alicia suggests we invite local dance studios to perform at the festival to offer a different form of art.Laurie has recommended having local artists design the poster to represent this year's festival and that it be put in the Tideviews newsletter.Rusty suggests that once all the applications are in the committee keeps an open mind to other locations. iv) Shakespeare in the Park Linda announced that ABET presented her with a proposal to do the "Twelfth Night"by Shakespeare. The event will be held the first or second weekend in June 2006. The budget given by ABET is under $3500.00 to perform.Linda passed out a breakdown of the events budget. The days for these shows would be Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon to be held at Russell Park.Pam Monte Leone, which is a professor at UNF and teaches Shakespeare will direct this show.Rusty inquired about how this event would be funded.Timmy mentioned the New Year's Event is not taking place and the Committee agrees to use the money reserved for that event. A motion was made by Ray Coleman,seconded Linda to reallocate the funds for the New Year's Eve event to the 411 Shakespeare in the Park event. b) AB Public Art Committee Update The Committee is scheduled to meet next month. c) Teen Council Kathy reported that the Teen Council has approximately 25 members. About fifteen of the members assisted with the Katrina Release Efforts held in Town Center. Timmy informed Kathy that Teen Council needed to schedule all events through Parks and Recreation and all purchases need to be approved prior to the event. The following events have been scheduled: • A Surf Contest is scheduled for November 5 from 8 to 1 PM in Hannah Park. • A Teen Acoustic is scheduled for November 20 from 4 to 6 PM in Bull Park. • The Teen Council will assist with the bike parade in Town Center December 3. 4. New Business a) Mayport Middle School After School Program Update Laurie reported that she met with the Principal of Mayport Middle School and came up with a detailed budget,which was emailed out to everyone. Laurie met with the Principal at AB Elementary and stated that she had no problem sharing the funds for their after school programs to help fund programs 11) at Mayport Middle.The Committee members agree that it is a great idea and will benefit both schools. A motion was made by Ray Coleman,seconded by Alicia to reallocate the funds for the Atlantic Beach Elementary Schools after school enrichment program to the choral program at Mayport Middle School. 5. Other Ray mentioned that the Committee needs to plan events at each of the parks.He also suggests that the Committee members go visit each park and become familiar with them. Alicia has a list of several activities the Committee might be interested in planning.She will email the list to Timmy and then the Committee members can pick the events they want to plan.Alicia mentioned the following events a bike ride,family Olympics,story time,and a scavenger hunt throughout the parks. Linda has an idea of having an International Food Festival to educate the community on different cultures.This would be held sometime next year. Ray mentions that the City needs two more marquees to inform the residents of various things taking place within the City.Rusty agreed to mention the purchase of such a marquee to the Commission.Laurie states that residents in the surrounding areas of where the marquees would be placed might dispute the locations. A motion was made by Ray Coleman,seconded by Linda Ginsberg to support a resolution for the erection of two marquees. Rusty has changed the date of the next meeting to December 15th,due to the holidays. 6. Adjournment There being no other business or discussion;the meeting was adjourned at 7:55 p.m. C .11-person Rusty 'ritchett
