CULTURAL ARTS AND RECREATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE
• June 22,2004
A regular meeting of the Cultural Arts and Recreation Advisory Committee was held Tuesday,June 22,
2004, in the Adele Grage Cultural Center. Present were Chair Rusty Pritchett, Ray Coleman,Linda
Ginsberg,Steve Piscitelli,James Woodruff,Parks and Recreation Director Timmy Johnson,and Parks
and Recreation Administrative Assistant Athena Shearer as Recording Secretary. Katherine Burgess,
Ingrid McCawley,James Strutchen,Jr.,and a representative from the Teen Council were absent.
1. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m.
2. Approval of Minutes of May 25,2004
A motion was made by Committee Member Coleman,seconded by Committee Member Piscitelli to
approve the minutes of May 25,2004,as they appear.Carried unanimously.
3. Old Business
a)Events/Programs
i) Acoustic Night Under the Stars:
Steve Piscitelli reported that the last event was just held June 20th and that it was moved into
the theater due to chance of rain and about 50-60 people attended. The next event was
scheduled for July 18th and the following dates were set for August 15t, September 12t and
October 10th from 6-8pm. Timmy Johnson suggested adding,"in case of rain event will be
• held in the theater"to future advertisements.
ii) Songwriter's Concert:
Steve Piscitelli stated that the committee needed to make a decision on the event due to the
lack of attendance at this event. He said there were only about 20 people at the last event on
June 8th. He suggested 4 options: cancel the event,keep the event once month,have the event
twice per month,or continue having the event once a month and reducing the fee paid to
Mike Shakelford.Linda Ginsberg suggested having the event once every other month.Ray
Coleman suggested finding out what Mike Shakelford's reduced fee would be. Rusty
Pritchett reminded everyone that the funds for the event were budgeted thru September 2004.
Athena Shearer suggested having the event night moved to Sundays once a month,and
alternate every other weekend with the Acoustic Night event. Steve Piscitelli checked with
Mike Shakelford and he agreed to continue the Songwriters' Concert for$250 per event and
agreed to move the event night to Sunday night.
Motion by Ray Coleman,seconded by James Woodruff,to approve the Songwriters'
Concert event for$250 per event thru September 2004,carried unanimously.
iii) Paint It Up:
Katherine Burgess was absent.Timmy Johnson stated that the City Manager did not agree
with the idea of painting the slats and that he preferred the natural look of the trash
receptacles,and that the project would need to be approved by the City Commission.Rusty
Pritchett stated that Katherine Burgess needed to get the design concepts ready for the next
meeting.
• b) Public Art Fact Finding Committee Updates
Ray Coleman stated that he was not at the last meeting,but that they are looking at the flag-
pole location at Adele Grage as the first site for public art. He said that Commissioner Paul

III Parsons would find out the costs involved with moving the flagpole and getting a pedestal.
Linda Ginsberg asked if there was any other location instead of moving the flagpole.Ray
Coleman said that they did not have another location at this time that was cost effective.
c) Teen Council
There wasn't anyone present for the Teen Council to give an update. The 3 new officers were
all on vacation.
d) Concrete Sculpture
Timmy Johnson reported that he sent the first payment to James Moore and he has not heard
anything back about when the sculpture would be delivered.The plaque would arrive before
the sculpture.
4. New Business
a) Fun Run Event
Steve Piscitelli reported that the date was set for August 1st and that flyers and publications
have gone out.Timmy Johnson said he got a quote of$6.25 each for the T-shirts and that
they needed 20 days notice of how many to print. Mr. Johnson said he would check on
emergency medical personnel to be present for the event.Publix donated a$50.00 gift
certificate to use for bananas and sports drinks. The consultant would map out the course for
the event. Mr. Piscitelli said they needed 10 volunteers to help run the event. Steve Piscitelli
recommended that any money made off the event go to the Teen Council Scholarship Fund.
Timmy Johnson suggested that Mr.Piscitelli notify the Sea Turtle Inn and the Sea Horse
• Hotel about the event as a courtesy. Mr.Johnson said that the Teen Council would be a good
source for volunteers.(Steve Piscitelli left the meeting at 7:30pm to attend the Songwriters'
Concert)
b) Concert in the Park
Linda Ginsberg said the date was set for September 4th and that she would confirm with the
Public Relations contact with the Navy Band around July 561.The event would be held for 2
hours at Jack Russell Park from 5-7pm. The Navy required that the advertisements for the
event include the language"open to the public."They would need someone to be the MC for
the event to introduce the band.
c) Committee Member Term Limits
Timmy Johnson stated that 4 members term limits were up on July 8th. Katherine Burgess,
Linda Ginsberg,Ingrid McCawley and Rusty Pritchett all volunteered to be re-appointed.
d) Atlantic Beach Athletic Association
Rusty Pritchett reported that the association had a new President,Chris Todd.
5. Adjournment
Chair Pritchett reminded everyone that the next meeting would be July 27,2004. There being no
other bus' s or discussion,the meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
