MINUTES OF CULTURAL ARTS AND RECREATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE • May 25,2004 A regular meeting of the Cultural Arts and Recreation Advisory Committee was held Tuesday, May 25, 2004, in the Adele Grage Cultural Center. Present were Chair Rusty Pritchett,Katherine Burgess,Ray Coleman,Linda Ginsberg,Ingrid McCawley,Eleni Zimmerman,James Woodruff, and Parks and Recreation Administrative Assistant Athena Shearer as Recording Secretary. Parks and Recreation Director Timmy Johnson, Steve Piscitelli,and James Strutchen,Jr.were absent. 1. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. Ingrid McCawley arrived at 7:03 p.m. and Linda Ginsberg arrived at 7:10 p.m. 2. Approval of Minutes of April 27,2004 A motion was made by Committee Member McCawley,seconded by Committee Member Coleman to approve the minutes of April 27,2004 as they appear. Carried unanimously. 3. Old Business Chair Pritchett announced that Margee Van de Guchte had resigned from the committee and introduced James Woodruff as her replacement and that Eleni Zimmerman was representing the Teen Council as Co- President. Ms.Zimmerman announced that the new officers for the 2004-2005 school year were herself and Brian Bush as Co-Presidents and Dylan Goelz as Vice President.The Committee proceeded to introduce themselves to the new members. • a)Events/Programs i) Acoustic Night Under the Stars: Chair Pritchett explained what the Acoustic Night event was to the new members and that the event was approved through October,but that the dates were not set for September and October yet. ii) Songwriter's Concert: Chair Pritchett reported that the last event was held May 18th and that Steve Piscitelli submitted information that only 15 people were in attendance. The next event was scheduled for June 8h.He deferred any action until Committee Member Piscitelli returned. iii) Paint It Up: Katherine Burgess stated that she spoke to Duval Paint and found 5-gallon size buckets of Krylon Fusion paint in gloss or satin to paint the slats of the trash receptacles. She found out that the paint preparation time would only be 10 minutes.The estimate for the 5-gallon bucket was$35.00 to$40.00 each.Ms.Burgess stated that she would contact art teachers and try to get volunteers lined-up.Committee Member Ginsberg stated that she did not approve of the project.Chairman Pritchett recommended that Ms. Burgess get ideas for art designs and fmd out from Timmy Johnson about the removal of the slats. b) Public Art Fact Finding Committee Updates Ray Coleman stated that he was not sure whether the City Commission had approved removing the Palm Tree at Bull Park,but that the feedback was that they liked the 5-points area near the mailbox the best. The idea came up to raise money for public art by bricking the • walkways near the 5-points area. He stated that all they need is a podium and they could get plans in motion by next month.Mr.Coleman stated that the Commissioners had perceived • Minutes of Cultural Arts and Recreation Advisory Committee May 25, 2004 Page 2 • the phrase"rotating art"as art that would be moving 360 degrees.Chair Pritchett added that he was at the City Commission meeting Monday, May 24th and that Commissioner Waters encouraged the committee to keep an open mind about public art to include natural art. c) Teen Council Eleni Zimmerman reported that they had the"Concert in the Park"event Sunday,May 23`d, and had a good turnout. They had elected new officers. They selected 3 scholarship winners. Taylor Hill and Ciara Drummond both received$500,and Amanda Furness received$1000. The Teen Council will meet the first Tuesday in June and July and return to their regular schedule when school starts.Chair Pritchett asked about next year's budget and suggested getting the information for the Surf Contest in as early as possible as the deadline for the newsletter is on the 15t of each month. d) Concrete Sculpture Athena Shearer reported that we are waiting for the sculpture to be delivered. Ingrid McCawley asked if the City would have an unveiling.Ray Coleman stated he thought there would be an unveiling. 4. New Business a) Website James Strutchen,Jr. was not present. Athena Shearer stated that Timmy Johnson spoke to the City Manager and he did not think it would be a good idea to set up a separate website for the committee and that everything should be placed on the city's website. • Committee Member Coleman requested to have a photo gallery or link that could be updated monthly. b) Fun Run Event Chair Pritchett deferred any action until Steve Piscitelli was present. Ingrid McCawley suggested a parade of historic homes in Atlantic Beach. She would try to get some information for the next meeting. Committee Member Ginsberg suggested having a concert at Russell Park with the Navy Band or Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra.The Navy Band would be free,but they would need 30-60 days notice and 3 suggested dates.The Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra would cost about $7,500 for 2 hours.The Committee agreed that the Navy Band would be a good idea. Linda Ginsberg said she would contact the Navy Band and try to set up the dates.Katherine Burgess suggested having a"Family Fun Day"combined with the concert. James Woodruff suggested having an"art show"along with the Teen Council Surf Contest. 5. Adjournment Chair Pritchett reminded everyone that the next meeting would be June 22,2004.There being no other b ess or discussion,the meeting was adjourned at 8:05 p.m. Jrip L_. • Rus Pritchett,Chair
