CULTURAL ARTS AND RECREATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE
January 27,2004
A regular meeting of the Cultural Arts and Recreation Advisory Committee was held Tuesday,January
27, 2004, in the Adele Grage Cultural Center. Present were Chair Rusty Pritchett, Katherine Burgess,
Ray Coleman, Ingrid McCawley, Steve Piscitelli, Mara Sloan, Parks and Recreation Director Timmy
Johnson and Administrative Assistant Athena Shearer as Recording Secretary. Absent were Margie van
de Guchte, Rex Sands,and James Strutchen,Jr.
1. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m.
2. Approval of Minutes of December 9,2003
Steve Piscitelli suggested the following changes to the minutes:
In section a) Events/Programs subsection ii) Songwriter's Night,the sentence"The schedule for 2004
included 12 events for a total of$4200"applied to both Acoustic Night and Songwriter's Night events.
Discussion ensued regarding the wording.
A motion was made by Committee Member Ray Coleman,seconded by Committee Member
Katherine Burgess,and unanimously carried to combine subsections i.and ii.
A motion was made by Committee Member Steve Piscitelli,seconded by Committee Member
Ingrid McCawley to approve the minutes of December 9,2003 as amended.
• 3. Old Business
a) Events/Programs
i) Acoustic Night Under the Stars and Songwriter's Workshop:
Steve Piscitelli discussed changing the date of the June 20th Acoustic Night because of
Father's Day. The board agreed to keep the date the same and to have city staff continue to
serve coffee and water instead of trying to obtain a vendor. He reported the Songwriters'
Night held January 20th was the best high-energy night. The next Songwriters' Night is
scheduled for February 17th, 2004. Steve suggested changing the signs to say"Songwriters'
Concert"and adding"Open to the Public."Timmy Johnson proposed that each board
member bring at least one person to Songwriters' Night to help with attendance.
ii) Senior Appreciation Day:
Katherine Burgess stated that she would like to schedule the next event for sometime in May.
iii) Paint It Up:
Katherine Burgess reported that she would take the sample of the trash receptacle to Sherwin
Williams to get paint ideas.
iv) Art in Public Places
Margie van de Guchte was absent. Chair Rusty Pritchett reminded the board that the next
artist's display is set for May.

v) Laughter Workshop:
Kathleen Beaudreau had requested the event be moved to February 12,2004 at 7:00 p.m.
A motion was made by Committee Member Ray Coleman,seconded by Committee Member
Steve Piscitelli,and carried unanimously to have the money for the January Laughter
Workshop carried over to February.
Discussion ensued regarding the possibility of the event being postponed once again.
An amended motion was made to have the money for the January workshop allocated to
another Laughter Workshop whenever held,and carried unanimously as amended.
vi) After School Enrichment
Margie van de Guchte was absent.
b) Public Art Fact Finding Committee Updates
Ray Coleman reported that Shep Bryan was applying for 501c3 status under the name Atlantic
Beach Committee, Inc. He reported that Martin van de Guchte,Curator at the Cummer Gallery of
Art and Gardens, gave a suggestion to the committee to contact a circuit of artists to display their
works on a pedestal for 3 months at a time and the City would just pay for the pedestal and
transportation. Mr. Coleman also stated that the committee still needed to decide on the first
• location to display the first sculpture and they had 5 areas they are considering.
c) Teen Council:
Mara Sloan reported that they would help with the skate into the future skatepark fundraiser on
February 7,2004 from 10:00 a.m.to 1:00 p.m.The Teen Council is scheduled to have a car wash
on March 6th,a Teen Acoustic Night on March 7th,a garage sale on April 3rd, and the Concert in
the Park on May 2°d. She stated that she would provide the location information later and the
Council would like to post the events on the city's website.
d) Concrete Sculpture
Timmy Johnson stated that the model of the concrete sculpture was complete, but the actual
sculpture would not be ready for delivery until sometime in February and he will keep the
committee informed of any developments.
4. New Business
Chair Pritchett stated that Committee Member Sands had missed 3 meetings and asked the other
members if they agreed that he should be removed from the committee as stated in the by-laws.
Mr.Johnson stated that he had talked to Mr. Sands and that he offered to resign. It was agreed
that Committee Member Rex Sands be removed from the committee and Mr.Johnson would
notify him.
Committee Member Burgess suggested having a type of family fun day in the park. Mr. Coleman
suggested having the event at the end of the school year. Ms. McCawley suggested having a 4th of

5. Adjournment
Chair Pritchett reminded everyone that the next meeting would be February 24, 2004. There
being no other business or discussion,the meeting was adjourned at 7:58 p.m.
