Present were Chair Rusty Pritchett,Katherine Burgess, Steve Piscitelli,Rex Sands,Mara Sloan,James Strutchen,Betsy Tidwell,Margie van de Guchte,Parks and Recreation Director Timmy Johnson and Committee Secretary Susan Dunham. Absent was Ray Coleman. 1. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. 2. Approval of Minutes of May 29,2003 Chair Pritchett made the following correction: 3.a)i)line four: change"...prepare..."to"...prepared..." A motion was made by Committee Member Piscitelli,seconded by Committee Member Strutchen, and unanimously carried to approve the Minutes of May 29,2003,as amended. 3. Old Business a) Events/Programs i) Update on Acoustic Night Under the Stars: Committee Member Piscitelli gave the following update: • • 75 people attended the June 22 event; • Seven acts participated; • The event was well received; • Photos were available at www.mikeshackelford.com/events;and • Next Acoustic Night Under the Stars was scheduled for July 20,2003,6:00 p.m.to 8:00 p.m. Committee Member Piscitelli suggested the following for the next event: • Schedule the theatre as backup in case of rain—Timmy Johnson to confirm availability; • Publicity out earlier; • Prepare tent for Point Café; • Suggested holding event monthly for the next six months; and • Next event scheduled for August 17. ii) Other Programs • Teen Council: Committee Member Sloan advised that approximately 20 teens attended the ropes course at the YMCA. She advised that all the teens climbed to the top of the tower,they performed trust exercises, life situations,reaching for goals,etc. Parks and Recreation Director Timmy Johnson stated that he thought this was a very positive activity for the teens. • Skate Park: Parks and Recreation Director Timmy Johnson advised that a public meeting was held last night,June 23. He stated that the architect brought a drawing of a proposed 6,000 square foot skate park in Russell Park for beginner to intermediate level skate boarders. He further stated that he would be meeting with the architect tomorrow to"tweak"the plan and then it would be brought to the Commission in July for their approval. Parks and Recreation Director Timmy Johnson advised that they were looking for someone to spearhead the fundraising. He • advised that they have a$6,000 commitment from Aqua East and he would be applying for a state grant. Minutes of Cultural Arts and Recreation Advisory Committee June 24,2003 Page 2 1111 ■ Sculpture: Parks and Recreation Director Timmy Johnson advised that the contractor had prepared the framework,would pour it at the end of July and the sculpture would then have to cure for one month. He advised that they hoped to have the sculpture installed by the first of September. • E-mail list: Committee Member Strutchen advised that he would begin putting this together. • Paint it Up—Atlantic Beach: Committee Member Burgess stated that this program would be geared to the elderly and children ages 3-7. She stated that she would like to integrate these two groups and have them paint trash receptacles around Atlantic Beach. She estimated a budget of approximately$800 for paint,brushes and supplies. The following suggestions were made: - Stay away from bright,gaudy colors; - Have two or three people to approve art designs prior to beginning project; - A possible competition? - Begin with the beach trash receptacles(approximately 35 cans); - Have the children paint first,then have the adults clean them up; - Begin the project in October in the cooler weather;and - Set up guidelines. • Senior Appreciation Day: Committee Member Burgess suggested a senior appreciation day to get seniors more involved in the community. She suggested holding the event at Adele Grage on September 20,2003,at 2:00 p.m.and setting up cards or bingo,serving refreshments and playing • some music. The following suggestions were made:_ Ice cream social; Bring in a disc jockey--Committee Member Strutchen offered to disc jockey for two hours;and - Offer door prizes. A motion was made by Committee Member Piscitelli,seconded by Committee Member van de Guchte,and unanimously carried to approve the Senior Appreciation Day as discussed with a tentative date of September 20. • BasketballNolleyball Competitions: Committee Member Strutchen suggested three-on-three basketball competitions and one-on-one volleyball competitions. Chair Pritchett suggested that Committee Member Strutchen continue forward with planning these events. The following suggestions were made: - Hold the volleyball event in the summer and the basketball event in the winter; - Trophies as prizes;and - Schedule as weekend events. • Art in Public Places: Committee Member van de Guchte advised that she would like to revive "Art in Public Places." She stated that the goal was to display Atlantic Beach artists' work around the city. Committee Member van de Guchte asked about using Adele Grage to display Alice Gartland's artwork but expressed concern about security. Parks and Recreation Director Tinuny Johnson responded that the event could be planned when no one was scheduled to use Adele Grage. • Studio Tour: Committee Member van de Guchte stated that artists open their studios to the public • for this event and tickets are$10.00. She stated that all proceeds are given to art in the schools. She has scheduled this event for October and would like to hold the reception at Adele Grage. i ,,Minutes of Cultural Arts and Recreation Advisory Committee June 24, 2003 Page 3 110 ■ Songwriter's Night: Committee Member Piscitelli suggested a songwriter's night led by a professional songwriter at the Adele Grage Theatre. He suggested holding the event on a Tuesday night, inviting people,all original material and setting up the theatre as a coffeehouse. Chair Pritchett thanked everyone for all their hard work. He suggested that the committee members schedule dates for events,detail the events in writing and prepare budgets. Committee Member Piscitelli informed the committee that Bull Park had a natural amphitheatre if one palm tree could be removed. Committee Member van de Guchte stated that she would talk with Kelly Elmore with regard to the design significance of the palm. Discussion was held with regard to the budget. Parks and Recreation Director Timmy Johnson advised that he had submitted the budget to the City Manager. He recommended that the committee"fine tune" the budget to ensure that budgeted items be carried over to the next fiscal year. Chair Pritchett requested that one of the committee members take responsibility for pursuing reader boards. Discussion was held with regard to publicity. It was determined that Committee Member Strutchen would head this position. 4. New Business None. • 5.
