AGENDA ITEM: Proposed Rejection of Bid for 2005 Plaza Road Turn Lane for Post
Office (Bid No. 0405-17)

BACKGROUND: The bid opening for the Plaza Road Turn Lane occurred on June
29, 2005. Only one of two prequalified contractors submitted a bid, and their bid
($115,977.20, including 10% contingency) was substantially over the budgeted amount.
The design for those portions of the modifications on Post Office property is at 90%,
awaiting comments from the USPS.
BUDGET: This project is funded from the Half Cent Sales Tax Account, Budget Line
item 131-5002-541-6300; PW0305 -Current balance $98,250.
. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends rejecting all bids for this project. The City
would then rebid the project, timing the proposed construction schedule to coincide with
improvements to be built on Post Office property. Because there is no current forecast
date for when construction of these improvements will begin, impact of delaying
construction of the Plaza Road improvements is minimal. This will allow the
prequalified firms to bid, while also providing an opportunity for additional bidders to
prequalify.
