Find Us On Facebook Visit us on facebook! www.coab.us/facebook F ro m T he c it y m an a g e r On the last Tuesday in May of 2012, I started the City Manager job in Fernandina Beach in the middle of Tropical Storm Beryl. By Wednesday the storm moved on, and by Thursday piles of yard debris dominated the streets of the city. Sound familiar? Fast forward to September of 2017, my third week on the job here in Atlantic Beach, we were in full hurricane prep mode. I won’t bore you with the already re-hashed details, but I was amazed how every Department worked as part of the team managing the crisis. From the City Manager’s office right on through the ranks we performed as a close knit group working together to keep the public informed and minimize damage. There was no one-upmanship, no arguing or backbiting. Just one team of employees doing their best to provide service to the community. The silver lining from Hurricane Irma was that I got to know City staff very quickly, and I was very impressed with their skills and knowledge, as well as their composure in a difficult and stressful situation. As a new City Manager, I feel very lucky to have such a competent staff in place. There are some improvements we need to make in our day to day operations, and we will make those changes to enhance the level of service we deliver to our citizens. Now life is pretty much back to normal here in Atlantic Beach. The debris is all picked up, the cool weather is here, we have a new Mayor and two new Commissioners sworn in, and we are preparing for the holiday season. Your Commission and staff will be working hard through the next several months working on a wide range of issues, including ordinances that regulate medical marijuana, 5-G wireless towers, a new sign code, as well as the start of re-writing the Land Development Code. Staff will be busy renovating the lifeguard station, putting in sidewalks, and making improvements in City Hall and the Commission Chambers, along with several upgrades at our parks. Finally, my wife Carrie and I are thrilled to be here in Atlantic Beach. We have met many wonderful citizens, and are enjoying all the fun things to do, including visiting the great restaurants here in the city. We both would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, a happy holiday season and a safe and healthy 2018. Joe Gerrity City Manager Crime Prevention During the holiDay SeaSon The Atlantic Beach Police Department wishes everyone a safe and happy holiday season. Here are some important crime prevention tips to follow during the holidays: • If you travel during the holidays and leave your home unattended, make sure all doors and windows are property secured. Have a trustworthy neighbor or family member watch your home and pick up newspapers and mail. • Valuables should not be visible through the windows or doors of your home. • Indoor and outdoor lights should be on an automatic timer, so the house looks occupied. • Take time to register for a vacation watch check at the Police Department. • When leaving your vehicle parked, at or away from your residence, remember to park in an area that is visible to the public and well lit at night. Always lock all doors and remove all valuables. • Don’t display gifts beneath the Christmas tree that can be seen from windows or doors. • After the holidays, don’t advertise gifts received by leaving boxes for the garbage collection. It is a good idea to destroy boxes and place in a sealed, non-clear garbage bag, or flatten for closure in a recycle bin. houSeholD haZarDouS WaSte anD e-WaSte ColleCtion event The City of Jacksonville will hold a household hazardous waste and E-waste collection on Saturday, Jan. 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Jacksonville Beach Public Works parking lot (1460 Shetter Ave).
