On behalf of the city, we wish you a very Happy New Year! We have a new City Commission in place, and I am pleased to report that we are working closely together -- and very hard -- to represent the best interests of our residents and our city. The experience and commitment of Commissioners Blythe Waters and John Stinson is going to be well matched by the fresh eyes and equal commitment of new Commissioners Brittany Norris and Candace Kelly. Thanks to the last Commission, we are fortunate to have three years to work together before the next election! Initiatives already underway include an update to the Stormwater Master Plan, a rewrite of the Land Development Regulations, and a revisioning for the Mayport Road corridor. In addition to efforts by citizen volunteers on existing committees, newer committees are working hard on issues like parking at Town Center and our tree canopy. It is all very exciting! As your new mayor, my personal mission will be to protect, preserve and improve Atlantic Beach for our future. Achieving this mission will involve working closely with our City Manager Joe Gerrity and our talented staff to: • Provide a safe, family-oriented community • Deliver effective and efficient customer service • Enhance public spaces and our tree canopy • Promote art, culture, history, and recreation • Manage growth while balancing business & resident concerns • Plan strategically as a beach and marsh community • Promote inclusiveness through neighborhood connections • Strengthen local brand as military-friendly town Last year was a particularly challenging one for me as a UNF faculty member and as a newcomer to local government. As a teacher, I tried to help my students process extranormal acts of violence, the opioid crisis in America, and racial tension on my campus. As a citizen and new mayor, I tried to learn as much as I could about the myriad, complex issues facing our city. In both arenas, I have found that dialogue and knowledge are key tools for understanding and meaningful action. As we hit the “reset” button to close out an election year, thanks again to all those elected officials and employees who have served and do serve our city so faithfully. It is on your shoulders that we stand. In the coming year, let us refocus our collective efforts on a renewed sense of community and our shared love for Atlantic Beach. The future of our special city is not about me -- it is about us. Together. Best regards from my family to yours, Ellen Glasser Mayor of Atlantic Beach #WeAreAB MISSING PETS Is your pet missing or lost? Here are a few things you can do to increase your chances of reuniting with your pet as quickly as possible: Contact Animal Control at (904) 247-5866 when your pet is missing. You can also call the non-emergency police line at 904-247-5859 and give a detailed description of your pet and where it is missing from. Don’t allow cats outside unsupervised. Not only is it unsafe, it’s against the City leash law. Keep collars and ID tags on your dogs and cats at all times. Microchip your pet. This is a good backup should the collar come off. Animal control offices have microchip scanners and are able to trace chips back to registered owners. Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services will microchip your pet for $10. Call 904-630-2489 for more information. Ensure your contact information current. Is the tag on your pet readable? Are the phone numbers correct? Has your contact information changed since your pet was micro-chipped? If so, the best time to replace tags and update microchips is now, before an emergency. A little preparation now can save a lot of heartache later. Hopefully, your pet will never get out. Should it happen, however, Atlantic Beach Animal Control would like to reunite you with your pet. A BIG THANK YOU TO THE BEACHES COMMUNITY The City of Atlantic Beach wishes to thank the Beaches community for its generosity in making the Holiday Gift Tree and Toy Drive for local children a tremendous success. DONNA MARATHON COMING FEB. 11 The 11th annual DONNA Marathon is Sunday, Feb. 11. Runners love our community because of all of our spirited supporters and curb crews who come out and cheer them on as they complete their journey to the finish line. Each year the organizers of the marathon mark the route within our community with a special type of chalky paint that is designed to wash away after a hard rain. The City is requesting that citizens help keep our streets clean by not using any type of paint to mark the streets. If a more permanent type of paint is applied to rough asphalt streets, the markings can be difficult, if not impossible, to remove. The City looks forward to welcoming this year’s participants and encourages everyone to come out and support the fight to finish breast cancer. For more information, visit www.breastcancermarathon.com. ARTS IN THE PARK 2018! Calling all visual, mixed medium and jewelry artists … The 15th Annual Arts in the Park will be held on Saturday, April 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Johansen Park under the beautiful tree canopy. Applications for the event are now being accepted. Visit www.coab.us/specialevents to obtain an application or contact the Recreation Department at 247-5828 or recreation@coab.us. Know an artist? Be sure to tell them how great this event is. IS YOUR ADDRESS NUMBER CLEARLY VISIBLE FROM THE STREET? There are a lot of homes and businesses in Atlantic Beach that do not have address numbers posted on their properties. Seconds count in an emergency! That’s why it’s important that your house is clearly marked for emergency personnel. Simply put, ensure that assistance coming from any direction is easily able to identify your house number. • Protect your family and your property by having large visible house numbers. • Firefighters, police officers and paramedics will be able to find you faster when your home is property marked. • A visitor, child, or injured person may be unable to give clear directions and rely on your house being properly marked. • Emergency personnel from a neighboring community may be unfamiliar with your area. • Script numbers or numbers that are spelled out in words may be aesthetically pleasing but are difficult to read quickly from the street. • Put the numbers under lighting, and use numbers with a contrasting background so they will be visible at night. • Attach numbers to the home and NOT a door. Doors can be opened which will make the markings no longer visible. • If your driveway is long, also post your house number on BOTH sides of a mailbox or sign pole at the end of the driveway near the road. • Be sure that the view of the numbers is not obstructed by trees, shrubs, or decorations, such as flags. Please think of prevention, think of the costs, think of the loss, and ensure we can find your number.
