Find Us On Facebook Visit us on facebook! www.coab.us/facebook F ro m T he c om m i s s i o n e r Friends and neighbors, The theme of this letter is “Change is Inevitable.” It’s not the change that causes so much apprehension; it’s the management of that change. Surely at some point in our City’s history, when streets were yet to be paved, the idea of paving streets may not have been well received. I can imagine the concerns of, “I don’t want paved streets, then someone will park in front of my house,” along with many other fears being expressed. But someone with great foresight saw far enough into the future to prepare for that change. Your City staff and elected officials are working very hard to be just as prepared. Focus on the Mayport Road corridor supporting and/or reviving businesses and residential amenities is under way. What change that brings is hard to predict. Workshops are imminent relative to revising the land development regulations that have caused such division in our City recently. Parking, the availability of parking and how it will be managed is being studied by your neighbors in hopes of ensuring pedestrian safety while optimizing utilization. Again, how this change is managed will determine how successful the outcome of such change is. And management of these changes and many others is so dependent on you. The only way for you to affect any of these changes necessitates your input, yourattendance at workshops and meetings, and your communication with your elected representatives. From my perspective, I am happy that the City live-streams Commission meetings. Again, someone had great foresight to implement that change. But you have no idea how welcoming it is to see you, in the chambers, when we convene. Last, one of the most important changes is yet to come. And each of you has a very valuable role to play in determining the management of that change and how it might impact you. In November, you will have an opportunity to vote for a measure designed to encourage voter participation and to move closer to ensuring that more Atlantic Beach residents’ voices are heard. The referendum this November asks you whether you want to move the election of your representatives to the November 2020 general election rather than the primary election cycle normally held in August. The election date would then coincide with the presidential or gubernatorial election cycles. In doing so, it is my belief that Atlantic Beach voter participation would dramatically improve because a far greater number of you turn out for these elections than have in the historical municipal election cycle. It also saves taxpayers the expense of an off-cycle election. Please reach out to me if you need more information on such animportant consideration. Regardless of whether we agree on the merits of the proposal, I want to provide every opportunity I can for you to be fully informed. The rest is up to you. After all, you are the Managers of Change! God bless you all and thank you for allowing me to serve you. John M. Stinson Introducing to AB … A jazz festival! The Cultural Arts and Recreation Advisory Committee is bringing live jazz to our community. The inaugural Atlantic Beach Jazz Festival will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sept. 15 in beautiful Johansen Park. Be sure to watch for more information about this much-anticipated festival. The United Nations and its member nations devote this day toimplementing UN recommendations and promoting concrete activities within their countries regarding the world's water resources. Each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater. This year’s theme – Nature for Water – explores how we can use nature to overcome the water challenges of the 21st century. Floods, drought and water pollution are all made worse by degraded vegetation, soil, rivers and lakes. When we neglect our ecosystems, we make it harder to provide everyone with the water we need to survive and thrive. Check out the World Water Day 2018 website atwww.worldwaterday.org. Let’s protect our precious water supply. Irrigation Days Change with Daylight Savings Time Here are a few things to remember beginning March 11, when irrigation is allowed two days per week. • Restrictions apply to private wells and pumps, ground or surface water, and water from your City meter. • Water no more than one hour per zone. • Water only when needed, and never between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Address Irrigation Days homes with odd-numbered addresses Wednesday and Saturday homes with even-numbered addresses Thursday and Sunday Non-residential properties Tuesday and Friday For more information on irrigation restrictions and water conservation, visit www.sjrwmd.com. Marsh Tales in March Join retired teacher Lynn Coalson for “Marsh Tales” Story Time on Saturday mornings in March at Dutton Island Preserve. Miss Lynn will lead a kid-sized nature hike for children and their parents through the beautiful marsh habitat. Greet our marsh critter friends like Rascal Raccoon, Fiddly the Fiddler Crab and Great Blue, and learn more about them through storytelling and songs. This is a free event rain or shine. The hour-long “Marsh Tales” program begins at 10 a.m. Bring a water bottle and bug spray, and wear boots or shoes that can get muddy. The adventure begins with a short hike followed by a sit-down story time, rather than reading from a book. The benefits of storytelling have stood the test of time but is becoming a lost art in the heavy influence of media in today's world. Says Miss Lynn: “It is my mission to connect children and families with nature through positive experiences like hikes and storytelling. We have beautiful nature parks right here in our own backyard of Atlantic Beach! We take care of what we love and stewardship begins at any age, but is especially significant in the early years of childhood. We love Dutton Island, and by getting more families there to experience its beauty, the more we will foster a connection and love for this very special place.” The COAB Needs You!
