Applying for a tree-removal permit?
Here’s your sign
Applicants for tree-removal permits in
Atlantic Beach now must post a sign on their
property upon making their application.
The idea behind this initiative is to broaden
the communication in Atlantic Beach about
proposals to remove trees in the community.
The “Notice of Tree Removal Permit
Application” signage program was
implemented by the Planning and
Community Development Department at
the recommendation of the Environmental
Stewardship Committee. The signs are to
remain posted until the permitting process and/or removal of trees is completed.
For more information on the signs or on the city’s tree-protection efforts, email
scorbin@coab.us or call 247-5817.
Help nesting sea turtles by keeping beaches
dark at night and obstacle-free
Keeping beaches dark at night and free of obstacles will help sea turtles
during their nesting season, which begins May 1 in Northeast Florida and
continues through Oct. 31. Dark means no artificial lighting visible from the
beach including flashlights and flash photography, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Despite Hurricane Irma’s landfall in September, thousands of sea turtle
nests were documented statewide last year. On Northeast Florida beaches,
6,649 loggerhead, green and leatherback sea turtle nests were recorded in
Duval, Nassau, St. Johns, Flagler and Volusia counties.
The Beaches Sea Turtle Patrol (BSTP), nature centers and local
governments contribute
greatly to sea turtle
conservation. The all-
volunteer nonprofit BSTP
is the only Florida Fish
and Wildlife Conservation
Commission (FWC)-
permitted turtle patrol in
Atlantic, Neptune and
Jacksonville Beach. But
caring beachgoers and
oceanfront residents can
also make a significant
difference in helping
nesting and hatchling sea
turtles survive.
Bright artificial lighting can misdirect and disturb nesting sea turtles and
their hatchlings, so beachgoers should avoid using flashlights or cellphones at
night. Turning out lights or closing curtains and shades in buildings along the
beach after dark will ensure nesting turtles are not disturbed as they come
ashore and hatchlings will not become disoriented when they emerge from
their nests. Clearing away boats, beach furniture and trash at the end of the
day, leveling sandcastles, and filling in holes in the sand are also important
because turtles can become trapped in furniture and get trapped in holes on
the beach.
Another key to protect sea turtles is not picking up hatchlings, which
typically dig out of nests and scramble to the ocean in September and October.
Other ways to help sea turtles include properly disposing of fishing line to
avoid entanglements, and reporting sick, injured, entangled or dead sea
turtles to the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922, or #FWC or
*FWC on a cell phone.
Purchasing a “Helping Sea Turtles Survive” Florida license plate at
Buyaplate.com contributes to sea turtle research, rescue and conservation
efforts. People also can donate $5 and receive an FWC sea turtle decal.
Visit MyFWC.com/SeaTurtle for more information on Florida’s sea
turtles, and click on “Research,” then “Nesting” for more data on sea turtle
nesting.

April is Water Conservation Month
April has been recognized as
Water Conservation Month in
Florida for 20 years, as April is
typically a dry month when
water demands are higher due
to springtime planting. Water is
our most precious natural
resource – so let’s highlight the
month of April by paying special attention to how we use water. Make
a special effort to use some simple solutions to saving water:
6 This is the perfect time to check your irrigation system for
leaks. Check the timer settings as well, and make sure the
moisture sensors are working properly.
6 Plant some drought-tolerant plants.
6 Install a low flow shower head.
6 Wait for full loads before using the dishwasher or washing
machine.
6 Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving.
Remember your days for irrigation – and only water when needed,
before 10: a.m. or after 4 p.m.
Address Irrigation Days
Homes with odd addresses Wednesday and Saturday
Homes with even addresses Thursday and Sunday
Non-residential properties Tuesday and Friday
For more information on irrigation restrictions and water
conservation, visit www.FloridasWater.com.
