AGENDA ITElVI: Authorize the Mayor to sign an Arbor Day Proclamation
proclaiming March 21, 2003 as Arbor Day and sign the
application for Tree City USA re-certification.

BACKGROUND: For the past 5 years, the City has been listed as a Tree City
and received a special five-year award for celebrating
Arbor Day and promoting awareness and appreciation of
trees among the residents of the community. This
proclamation encourages citizens to plant and preserve
trees and recognize March 21, 2003 as Arbor Day in
Atlantic Beach.
In accordance with Arbor Day, we are currently planting
trees at the following areas:
^ Seminole Road
^ Plaza
^ Marsh Oaks North and South
^ City Parks
Tree Board Recommended areas
RECOMMENDATION: Authorize the Mayor to sign an Arbor Day Proclamation
proclaiming March 21, 2003 as Arbor Day and sign the
application for Tree City USA re-certification.

PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, the celebration of Arbor Day was first observed in 1872 with the
planting of more than a million trees in the State of Nebraska, and
WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now an annual celebration throughout the nation and
the world, and
WHEREAS, trees can reduce erosion of our precious soil, clean the air, moderate
the temperatures, reduce our heating and cooling costs, and provide habitat for our
wildlife, and
WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, building materials
and fuel, and providing countless products made of wood, and
WHEREAS, trees in out City increase property values, enhance the economic
vitality of our businesses and serve to beautify our community, and
WHEREAS, trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and a symbol of
renewal.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John Meserve, Mayor of the City of Atlantic Beach, do hereby
proclaim March 21, 2003, as
ARBOR DAY

In the City of Atlantic Beach and urge all citizens to celebrate Arbor Day and to support
efforts to protect our trees and woodlands, and
Further, I urge all citizens to plant trees for the beauty and well being of this and
future generations

achieved the standards set forth by The National Arbor Day Foundation as noted below. (yCl1')
Standard l: A Tree Board or Department
List board members, and meeting dates for the past year; or name of city department and manager.
Barbara Mears, Maureen Shaughnessy, Bill Permenter, Don Ford Board Liason
Susan Dunham, Recording Secretary. The Tree Board meets the first and third
Monday of each month at 7:30 PM.
Standard 2: A Community Tree Ordinance
